@ngbass said in Usefulness of Wisdom DNA test for Basenjis: no traces of Basenji Surprise!! I have to admit, I was certain she had "B" in her. Regardless, she is a pretty princess and we know she's loved. If you ever have any questions about this little impersonator, feel free to ask.

As tanza has stated. the pups ears are not a worry, about 12 weeks they should start to settle down, when they have a full set of needles for teeth. And speaking about needles, keep them quarantined, (eg no dog parks, very local walks, etc), so that his mother's immunisations would still be effective through her milk. I await until their adult shots before releasing pups, then I know that they have at least the best start in life. Another item, buy a Dremel rotary tool, and start grinding their nails. The earlier you do it, then they get used to being trimmed, and the noise. A little bit at first, do not get down to the quick. It is done with the fine emery paper one, try on your own. It can get hot, NOT RECOMMENDED, so go to another nail if it is getting to warm. Keep learning and asking questions - no question is too silly or too hard, but you should not be asking the same question repeatedly. Have fun with your new found friend, and treat her like one of your human kids, about 2 - 4 yo. Best of luck.

Blue happens when there is an absence of red pigment. Some breeders try for them - Nocturnals for one. I think there was a move towards 'mahogany' too, a couple of years back.

She's gorgeous - Probably Basenji in there somewhere, yes, Beagle though ? only the colouring might suggest it. Try a DNA test if it really matters !

    O. K. I see a couple of things in your post. How much does she weigh? I ask because although Basenjis can be difficult on leash and are strong dogs, they sure can't pull me where I don't want to go! If control is an issue, I find a martingale collar with a wide neck works well. However, it would be much better to find a solution to this problem. Have a look at this [video].https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwNe5COoGhk Different breed, but I was very impressed with how well this guy's approach worked. Could be something worth trying if you have the patience for it. You say she won't bite you. So what about her feet? Can't you just insist gently that she let you handle them, and reward with treats for cooperation? What does she do, specifically, if you try to hold them? I used to trim my dogs' nails with the dog upside down on my lap, and it worked for all of mine, not that they loved the process, but sometimes you just have to say "yes, I am the boss of you, get over it!" ;-)

First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

The ears say Basenji. I have never replied but felt I had to this time. I have a Basenji-Pitbull mix named Daisy. It was Daisy's ears (and behavior) that I discovered her to be part Basenji. I have not found another breed with the ears such as Basenji's have. I'm sure I will get "crap" because I have not had DNA or other testing done but there is no mistaking, Daisy is part Basenji. I think its important to know if your dog is part Basenji because in Daisy's case she is 98% Basenji and 2% pitbull concerning her behaviors and personality. Daisy is 2 years old and it has been quite a learning experience owning such a smart, stubborn, loving, mind of her own, amazing dog! Daisy is a mix but I have to train, teach, go outside to yell out frustrations cause of her (and no I'm not kidding, but never in front of her) and all that goes with a pure Basenji because trying to train her like a normal dog does not work.

@helle-devi I notified BRAT shortly after "Heather" started the rant. I was concerned about several points (administering/adjusting med dosage without Vet approval/advice, ignoring Vet advice, and on and on). They called an emergency board meeting and took prompt action. Unfortunately, legal processes take time. All the while, Heather continued her rant. And more astonishing details were revealed. By the time Heather sent her first (wall of text itself) post, BRAT had already sent Heather an email explaining that they were reclaiming "Declan". Indicating that BRAT was already aware that things had gotten out of hand. I think Heather was a good "foster Mom" when she first started doing it. But something ... somewhere along the line ... started unraveling for her. I don't wish her any ill will. I do hope that she finds her way back. But I still think removing Declan from her home was "for the best". sigh (note: I do not know if Declan is still with her or not, Heather might have actually signed that agreement, but I doubt it.)

What about a leash and (serious) harness? Something that would limit the distance and prevent the pup from actually getting close enough to take a leap(?) I'm not talking about a harness made from straps, but one that would cradle the chest and stomach area enough to gently suspend (him) in the air -- just in case. Granted, you would have to take it on/off every time your dog goes onto the balcony, but it's the only thing I can think of to really make sure your dog is safe.
