Jaw quivering - an anxiety issue?

Basenji Talk
  • I was just playing with our mixed breed Rosie. She had a new hard Nylabone that she'd brought over to me. As I was reaching for it, she shifted her hold on the bone and accidentally caught my third finger (kind of got snagged on a pre-molar). I yipped a bit and had my eyes closed, as it did hurt plus I wanted her to be more careful. When I did open my eyes, she was sitting there with her lower lip quivering. I could tell she was really upset as she was sitting very still, without a command, and staring. I reassured her but she still had the lip quiver for a minute or more.

My opinion is that she was upset about hurting the alpha dog in our pack. I got up and moved around, but when I came back and sat down, she followed me and tried to lick the fingers on both of my hands. She doesn't really do a lot of licking until we go to bed (seems like a social thing morning and night).

I did some reading on the forum regarding jaw quivering so wondered if anyone had more info or opinions. Thanks!

  • @jerseygirl01 Could be anxiety, they are sensitive dogs. Nylabones are not safe for the dog despite what they advertise. I gave them to my girl who was a voracious chewer and found out years later that she had shattered many of her teeth. She had to have about eight teeth removed over three years.

  • Seems like you have a very cute and sweet girl. Congrats!

The article seems to be pretty much old news, a rehash of the DNA study by Ostrander in 2004. I haven't actually seen the article but from what was sent to me, it really is just that info. (I was not nice– went to the Pharoah hounds when the dna study came out to gloat as the study said really NEW breed that simply looks like old one that died out.) I can't find the study, though I have it saved somewhere so here is blurb: http://work.colum.edu/~amiller/dogs.htm That said, someone emailed me to post it and I forgot to. .. The mail said: Pass it along. Everyone needs to see this month's new NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC with the DOG on the cover (one of those Weimerhiners with a POODLE cut glued on!). The topic inside is the GENETICS of dogs and it has some AMAZING stuff about BASENJIS…including a beautiful head photo, a surprising genetic analysis (YES, our dogs are REALLY ancient, and SURPRISE, they are closer to CHOWS then they are to Pharaoh Hounds!!!! AND....OOOPS....Pharaoh Hounds and other "ancient breeds".. REALLY AREN'T!!! They are MODERN DNA dogs, created to LOOK like ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs!!! OURS..however, DO have VERY ancient genes (to the point where our B's are basically strange looking GRAY WOLVES if you look at the gene breakdown. WOW. There is also an amazing side bar full page story about the FOREVER dog and while they call them "no breed at all" (the dogs in African Villages)...well, look at the photo for yourself!!! Seems these dogs are NOT FERAL, but actually just "wild dogs" that have existed on the fringe of human society for Eons now. Part domestic, part wild...(all nuts, as we know) and indeed ancient. This is one edition we ALL need to own.<<<< For a cute interactive map : http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/dogs-that-changed-the-world/interactive-map-discover-ancient-breeds/1282/

I was thinking about it, and it may not be the actual noise that bothers him. The fireworks in July didn't bother him, and neither did the parade (firetruck sirens, marching bands, and all) that recently went by our house. It may be the vibrations. We are close enough to the base that our house actually shakes enough to knock the pictures and stuff off of the walls (we actually quit hanging photos on our walls because we had replaced so many frames). I'm still going to try some of the suggestions and will definitely figure out a new schedule for him. Thanks again.

Poor boy. I've never had to deal with that…it sounds like you've done just about everything you can. I wonder if taping your voices or making video of yourselves doing everyday things and playing it while you're gone would ease his anxiety a little? It's a just a thought.....
