There is still a lot of life in a 13 year old basenji, I hope someone is able to help them out.

@Quercus: I wasn't actually referring to dogs that are affected, but indentified as carriers. I was remember a discussion that occurred very early on in the testing, that some carriers may have some 'bleed thru' of the 'guilty' gene, and spill sugar very late in life. And Dr. Johnson wasn't sure if it was due to regular old age kidney changes, or some sort of genetic explanation. It is very possible that that is very old information, and no longer accurate…but it wasn't the case of inaccurate testing at all. Good information about testing carriers monthly, though. I didn't realize that, and I haven't been doing it...guess I need to start again.. I have never heard of anyone talking about "bleed thru" or what that is supposed to me. A dog cannot spill sugar [as in fanconi] without having two mutant genes. Which would then mean that the dog is affected. And to make sure it is understood, the two girls that were actually affected did NOT have inaccurate testing. Nothing happened at the lab or at home. The dogs DNA actually shows that they are carriers. Remember this is the linkage test, and not a direct test. With the recent equipment purchase and plan of some more testing, they wre able to narrow the 'possble' genes down to 1/3 of what they were planning to look at…so hopefully more info is forthcoming soon. It is good to know this girl will be getting a great home! Good luck with her!

I can see if the shelter contacted us. Sometimes the shelters would prefer to place them themselves. They need the money. I will let BRAT know though.

There is a difference between a shelter voluntarily giving animals to research and the state placing a "must do" on the shelter. It is this coercion I am opposed to, not the research or the fact that animals must be used for research. I am not a member of PETA…cows taste too good and that would make me a hypocrite. I am just so ready for government to get out of our way.

Dear Basenji Forums Community, I am sure many of you have been wondering what was the outcome of this rescue effort. Well, let us tell you it was unexpected. A rescue mission that was supposed to unite our community to help save a dog turned into a complete opposite and brought us apart. I would like to thank everyone who stepped in to help and put their time and money to attempt to save this dog and offer him a life without neglect. Members who volunteered themselves for this mission had many years of experience with the breed, with both ill-tempered rescues, and those that have been fabulous. They had enough experience to make a determination whether to attempt this or not. While this dog had issues it is imperative to keep in mind he was a just a puppy, and someone was willing to give him a chance. Others may have disagreed on the reasoning for attempting this, but at no time they were given the right to derail this mission and use this forum to publicly attack and discredit members whose only intentions were to help save this dog. As a result of the actions of certain members our whole community suffered: The dog was not saved Forum rules about code of conduct were broken Existing members were publicly offended and discredited New members were exposed to public arguments Our community lost potential member referrals Members had to be suspended from the forum It is really too bad and sad, because we built this community to bring together basenji owners, breeders, and exhibitors throughout the world. To be hopeful that they could help one another and dogs in need. Thank you again for trying to help. All donation have been refunded and no more assistance will be attempted. Which, of course, is unfortunate for the basenji in need. As a last note please remember to review our forums code of conduct and forum rules and to treat others with utmost respect. Like the Basenjis, each of us is unique with our unique character, but our admiration and respect for this breed have brought us together and make us a community. Disregard for our forum community rules will not be tollerated on this forum. Please contact Basenji Forums staff directly at admin@basenjiforums.com if you have any questions or concerns. This thread is closed for public discussion.

Cody follows me when I initially go into another room, but if I'm not holding food or a toy, doing something he finds interesting, or if something else catches his attention, then he leaves. He used to be a complete and utter velcro dog. He wouldn't leave my side at all, and there were a few times when I almost stepped on him or tripped over him. I agree though, I don't think it is just Bs. Moe, our mix, does the same thing. I just think they are nosy.

Getting the gov. involved won't do anything but hurt the legal folks. Just look at byb who go over the "legal" limit for ownership of animals in their care, or horders, who don't do even legal mandated care… Its going to take education and spay/neuter of any animal who leaves a shelter. It's going to take years...I only hope I see it in my lifetime.

Rita, he isn't here. The boy lives on the West Coast - I would give it my all if he can be transported this far.
