@Janneke: I wasn't serious ;) I'm glad Linda found new homes for the pups :) You have to wait for your own pup ;):D.

@Elscodobermann: Tilly does the same trick. Only she smacks poor old Humphrey dobermann on the head repeatedly if he is (in her opinion) closer to the fire than her - and only stops when he moves… Good job she wasnt around to try it with some of my previous dobes - we would have had basenji mince... Maya does that too! Except we dont have the luxury of a nice fire (i miss that! ) so its usually when someone is sat where she wants to be, or if she has scoffed her chews down too quickly and decided she wants someone elses, that sort of thing. The labradors just give into her but Delilah the pug is very much top dog (noones told Maya that though lol) and has put Maya in her place on more than one occassion! Thank god for Lilah, i'd actually have to TRAIN the basenji if it wasnt for her

I work at an animal shelter and always tell people when you first get the animal home give it a week or so adjustment time. Best to start it off with access to a small section of the house and slowly open it up so it feels comfortable. Don't introduce it to new animals/people until after that adjustment period is up and you think it's the right time. You definitely don't want to make a new thing a bad experience and scare the poor pup. Just go by how you feel it's reacting to the changes and you'll be fine. Plus it'll give it less flooring/items to destroy if it has that tendency already!

It's a coincidence that you should mention this Crystal. Yesterday i was writing to a young child who lives in Northern Malawi and was unsure whether to mention our Basenji. When corresponding you are asked to be careful about mentioning certain subjects in case you cause offence. However when i emailed for advice i have been told it will be ok to mention Malaika.

Nemo's on to something. A good B&W could pull that off without an accomplice though.

She was just spayed saturday..she's having trouble holding it for more than 30 minutes or so at a time…this evening she has seemed to have done better..2 hrs without having a problem..i take her out every 4 hrs..and she does her business..both..she's only lived here for 2 days..so it's really hard to get any real data yet..if it continues after a few days i will be taking her to the vet to see if it's UTI related. we're getting a crate this evening so i can see if it's a matter of her needing to be housebroken..or if she really is still having pressure from the surgery. Auriaya..our cat..seems to be in an ok mood today..she has kept to her larger part of the house..and i have been keeping Cambria to a smaller area until the two have had enough encounters on their own and ours to attempt putting them together..she's not marking in front of me. she's due for a vet visit anyway so i have scheduled it as well..we'll see if there is anything major wrong with her

@Basenjimamma: I remember reading that story about Carol..how funny and so true..I had that happen once when I flew to Sweden from Houston, with my then 6 month old daughter..the man behind me asked, rather rudely.." is she going to cry the whole way?" and I simply answered, "well I could arrange for that to happen".QUOTE] How perfect is that!!!! Great comeback!!!

@Andrew: As far as diapers go, my breeder recommended this, as basenjis are quick to tear them off and the cost can add up. Buy the smallest size boy's toddler underpants you can find. Cut a hole for the tail. Put a pantyliner in. I bought a 5 pack last year, and since you can custom cut the hole, it stays on a little better. I got the 2T size & had to safety pin it so it wouldn't fall off of Callie, but it was $3 for 5 & well worth it. Thanks so much. I had another friend recommend this as well. Maya still tried to chew them, but it's much easier on the pocket book : )

Totally agree with Pat. I have two intact female B's. They are NOT the best of friends and have to be watched constantly. They are never alone together. Yes, they've gotten into knock-down drag-out fights. I've been in the ring with slit throats, chewed up ears, scabs, etc. Not a good idea at all. I can control it simply because I watch them constantly and when they start to show signs of aggression, one goes into the crate. But it's not easy, it's stressful on everyone, and I really don't recommend it.

I used to hike frequently with mine, and considered getting them backpacks so they could haul some of their own water. However, when I did research, the recommendation was not to give them more than 10% of their weight to carry, which would be less than 2 lbs each for my girls. I decided I could carry that 3.5 pounds of water myself quite easily. So I don't have any recommendations, but if all he is carrying is mail, I think any of them would be fine.

She looks a lovely dog and so wonderful that she is such good friends with Jibini. I hadn't realised that there was a difference in colours in the two standards - the UK standard is the same as the French I believe.
