Going to duct tape hands about having dogs off leash. Marli, there are many problems with flexi leads including a dog too far from you should another animal charge. Work on loose leash walking so the dog doesn't pull and husband doesn't feel need to use one. http://www.clickerlessons.com/looseleash.htm That said, squirrels and chipmunks. Mine lose their minds when they see them. I use a leash they can't bite because Arwen would almost chew her legs off to get to one, but has learned the basenji proof lead won't give. Thanks to Jack Austin for telling me how to make one! [image: 5669Leash.jpg]

I don't care how much pampering my dog gets or whether or not TV is available - that's just icing on the cake and cash out of my wallet. I do care about the basic TLC that is offered. Here's a few things I looked for when checking out the doggie day cares: 1. How high are their fences and how do the dogs move from kennel to play area? 2. How large is the outside play area and are there bushes or other obstructions for the humans watching? 2. How many dogs do they let play together at one time? 3. How many humans watch over the dogs playing? 4. How do they introduce new dogs – small dog to small dog; temperment to temperment; free for all? 5. What doggie first aid training do the humans have? I visited one place that had a very very very large outdoor area and only the standard 4 foot fence. I asked what happens if a dog jumps the fence -- oh we've never had that happen (and they never had experience with basenjis either). I visited one place that had a large playroom and allowed all the dogs together at one time with only one person to watch over. I asked what happens if there's a fight -- oh I come running after them with a spray bottle of water. Don't be fooled by appearances.

I give my bitches 'Hormonise' from www.animal-health.co.uk before, during, and after their seasons. It solves most of the 'bitchy' problems. It is herbal and was originally developed for mares in season, I have used it to good effect for many years.

Hello to an old thread! Orlando needs some puppy love again :) How many Otowner's are left? Maybe we can meet up sometime after I get my new girl (or even before if Bear decides he'll deal with going to a dog park). I used to go to Fleet Peoples Park in Winter Park. Which one's do y'all prefer? I googled about a new dog park that opened this year in Winter Springs called Hound Ground. They even have a lil agility course it says, was thinking with a basenji type she might like it. Anyone been there? I was also thinking of taking them to a daycare facility once a week when my mom leaves to work with dad so they wouldn't be home alone bored while I worked every day. Parc Pet is a place in Longwood that sounded nice and on my way to and from work. I'll definitely have to drop in sometime to see, but if anyone's heard anything about them I'd love to hear! Hope to meet y'all sometime either here or one of those Tampa meet ups.

Late to the party…as always. But my boy does that just about every other night. He is quite vocal...in his sleep, and even while awake. He is far more vocal than my previous fella. He sometimes wakes me up with his noises. Yes, he wil growl, whine, and howl/yodel in his sleep. Welcome to my world!

None of mine care for young puppies of any breed, they try and avoid them. Once the pup is 8 or 9 months old, mine seem to like the same pup they have been growling and snapping at for 6 months! I agree with the yard as a more neutral area. Good luck, he's a cute puppy, hopefully will get neutered then your dogs may like him better.

My dog trainer laughed when I told him I got a Basenji, he said " you went from a lab who is easy to train and wants to please, to a Basenji who wants to do their own thing." He was right, Sophie my lab is very obedient and Kahirah… not so much! I will add that after 8 weeks of training my trainer said that Kahirah was a great dog even if she didnt listen very well. As others have posted my vet was also surprised how friendly she is because according to her lots of Basenjis are nippy

@khanis: Very bizarre… I heard a story like this years ago but had forgotten all about it. Story was VERY similar. Thanks for the jog down memory lane. Wish you could remember. The story behind the story for me. I must have been in 4th or 5th grade (so would have been 1971 or 72) and had to write a story along the lines of Paul Bunyan, a tall tale. My mother was helping me and told me this story as an example and being the rotten kid I was I wrote it down and turned it in . Since its almost 40 years later it's not exactly as told given the years and memory loss I filled in what I couldnt remember. I do recall my teacher telling me that my story was not a tall tale not sure what grade I got on it more than likely it was what I deserved:(

I dont know in terms of distance but mine usually go at least an hour and have gone 2 or more if its cool. I think they would walk all day if I had the time because they never want to go back home though once we get home they will plop down and go to sleep like they are exhausted. Gee mom is just so mean for dragging them all over the neighborhood and keeping them away from their sleep. As was mentioned chief being tri (9 months) feels the heat more than my r/w zoe but now that the days are cooler he keeps up with her fine.
