Another basenji slave in western PA

Basenji Talk
  • I was walking Senji, and a woman was driving past. She turned around to ask me if he was a basenji. It turns out she lives about a mile away and has 2 B's…male and female siblings. She said she got them from a breeder in Ohio. I didn't get to talk to her too much...Senji was yankious. Anyway, she told me the street she lives on. I'll have to look her up someday.

  • We live in W PA also, Eau Claire. A small local newspaper / printer office near us … I was surprised when I learned recently the owners had two basenji's; but they just had to put down the older one [due to very bad old age health issues].
I drive by Jeannette 2x a year on the way to my neurologist's office in Greensburg so I know the whereabouts of the town you live in.

Another PA resident here! I live near Mercer, PA. I used to work in Foxburg, but I'm now in Franklin. Eau Claire is such a nice area. I used to take the "scenic route" home from work through your town! Small world ;-)

  • We got Bisa from Rugosa Basenji's near Toledo, OH. She is a FANTASTIC person / breeder!

  • Yes! a very small world! :)

Aaaah … Rt. 58 W ... yes a nice relaxing drive along it!

I go to Franklin a lot ... love the Liberty Street antique shop! Can't think of the name of the restaurant on Liberty Street ... but the spaghetti is sure fantastic! :) Also like the French Creek Cafe.

Yes, it IS a very beautiful drive along the back roads. I love going either 308 N to the Rt. 8N exit to Franklin as well as 38N to Rockland and up to 322 W to get there too. I'm not much for one to be on heavily traveled roads or interstates but do when I need to.

Have you been to Foxburg lately? If not, stop in and eat at the pizza shop; tell Georgine and Steve that "Marsha" sent ya! <g>I miss the specialty made hot teas and missed being able to eat breakfast at Divani Chocolates; I'll have to stop in their Franklin shop next time I'm up there.</g>

  • I know of a couple in Emlenton who have a Basenji [sadly the oldest passed away recently]. We had a good time swapping 'unique' stories last time I saw them at their business. :p)

  • What fun to be made on the street that way.

@eeeefarm said in Can a male Basenji live with another male dog?: Tamu was considerate of Lady when she started to fail, The Duchess, a bitch bred by us, went to live with a another Basenji bitch. When Tok started to fail, the Duchess felt it her duty to feed her and went miles out over the fields, hunting. She brought back flea-ridden rabbits on an almost daily basis which she gently nosed towards the aging Tok. While she appreciated the deed, their owner didn't like the choice of diet which the Duchess provided for her friend. She was utterly devastated when finally Tok crossed the Bridge at 15 +

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Love the picture of Achilles - that "one paw in the air" stance is really nice - my girl, Shaye, stands like that when she is considering whether she can get to a squirrel or some other thing before the leash runs out…....

Lovely photos! your b's are gorgeous! Re: food….. after working in a dog grooming business, i must say i am amazed at the amount of people that come in with their overweight fluffies (i call them fluffies as its usually the maltese X's and shihtzus etc) that have no idea that... human food shouldnt be their diet! or what they feeding them is wrong and i dont know how many times we've tried explaining to either cut back or go on the proper food and they dont understand?! i dont understand how people can have such a hard time understanding food/nutrition for their dogs. I understand there are many different way etc which is all fine, but as long as its in the right moderation and its nothing ridiculas (such as a vegatarian diet.....deadly serious.... its like c'mon luv, they are carnivores...) anyways thats my rant :D

Here's an update on Lana: since the Hips/Eyes/Fanconi is all good/normal/clear (still waiting for thyroid), we actually went ahead and selected the male, absolutely stunning Ch. Bushbabies Red Ryder, from Bushbabies Basenjis in Livermore, CA. Waiting for Lana to come in heat! They are a very good match, body and personality, should be pretty nice puppies!

I feel SOOOOOO left out…. are there any other forum members in Tennessee??? You guys are SOOO lucky. I think I shall resort to posting notices at vet offices in order to build up a playgroup of basenjis. We have only met ONE other here in Knoxville, but I know there are others out there and hope to meet them ALL soon.
