Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Mmmmmm…the smell of singeing dog fur - I know it well! 😃 Mine sit so close to the small fan heater in my bedroom, it makes their whiskers go curly! :rolleyes:

The basenji my brother had when I was in high school would sleep UNDER our Franklin woodstove in the basement - Franklin stoves have higher legs than regular woodstoves. When Zeke would come out for water, you couldn't touch him as his fur would burn your hand. :eek:

I am pretty sure the spinning was an initiation rite 😉 I have never heard of that before…but I can just imagine you saying 'well, ooookay' 🙂 Hang in there, it is always hardest with your first show dog...try to have fun!

That's exactly what I said but it was right after I said "Seriously, you want me to do what?" 😃 The judge was a long-time basenji breeder so I figured she knew what she was talking about.

@Quercus:

I guess the moral of this story is that you will meet some jerky judges while you do this, and you may feel embarrassment and shame in their rings…but you will live through it, and be able to laugh later. The behavior of people who wish to shame you says more about them, than it does about you 🙂 my inspirational message of the day.

Thanks, I like that inspirational message. It's a good mantra for when I get a jerky judge. 🙂

Thank you…. I think I have officially gone Basenji crazy. My boyfriend teases me because I have taken over "his" dog, "his" username, and "his" love & gone two steps farther. He wanted a basenji because he had a mix growing up, and I was very leary. But now I have fallen head over heels in love with our dog... I plan my day around trips to the park, budget money just to buy him treats & toys, think of silly games to play with him to make him happy, etc.
Thank you for the resources! I'm tired of all the same old reading about Basenjis on the internet (the Basenji is a barkless dog... always alert... blah blah blah). Now I want to REALLY learn about them.

And there are many of us here that will be happy to answer questions for your too!
