After looking at the existing hound page on the AKC's website, (http://www.akc.org/breeds/hound_group.cfm), it's easy to see which other breeds the Basenji belongs with. The build of a Basenji is very similar to the Ibizan Hound and the Pharoah Hound - which will probably both end up on the sight hound group. I just can't see them in the scent hound group with the Basset Hound or Beagle! In the hound description, the AKC says: "Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry." I can definitely see the Basenji fitting into the first and last of this criteria. Hopefully after getting all of the feedback that they have, they'll keep B's right where they belong - in the sighthound group!

You might want to introduce them one at a time too. Our B Samantha gets a bit edgy when there are two dogs approaching at the same time - kind of feels like she's getting ganged up on and gets defensive.

@Gooby: Goober stole all the other dog's breakfast and dinner yesterday now he won't eat his dinner, has diarrhea and just threw up. We know he is very sensitive to his food so could this cause it? Also he had a new brand of wet food yesterday. And this is another good reason for feeding it crates and taking the food away when you let them out

Eli at 24.5 lbs and only 7 mos. Wow! Perhaps my Seren Jane not so big after all. She does a lot of chaseing squirels but no somersaults. I think its the treats though that are affecting her weight.

The Evergreen basenji club in Seattle has wonderful lure coursing and rally training. The basenji weekend is Aug is a great way to see b's do all sorts of activities. The dogs doing rally and lurecoursing are my fav…

I get the Basenji Calendar every year too. I noticed some of the dogs are the same one's from last years just in a different pose. They could at least take pics of some new dogs.

@torchsong: Yeah, there's been no wounding, but the in-laws are just worried about the bullying. I'll let them know what you've said here. The pot shots are funny…the schnauzzer waits until She-Ra walks off and then does an "Air Jordan" type jump at her back, which of course starts the chase all over again... Sounds perfectly normal to me

For more information on Proheart 6, Letter from Wyeth to veterinarians about Proheart 6 adverse reactions http://www.wyethah.ca/pdfs/Canine/EngLetterMarch16.pdf . American Veterinary Medical Article about Proheart 6 http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/oct04/041015a.asp "Over the course of the past three years, however, the FDA has received 5,913 adverse events reports about the drug from veterinarians and dog owners. According to the FDA, many of these reports involved life-threatening events, such as anaphylaxis, convulsions, hematopoetic disorders, and hepatopathies—about 616 reports involved deaths. The FDA has also evaluated a number of reports involving neurologic problems and cardiac signs."

My yard came with the standard 4 ft chain link fence and I have never had any real problem with EL D. When I acquired him from the breeder I made sure he was not a climber to begin with (she had some dogs that could clear 6 1/2 feet easy as pie). He likes to sit sometimes in the corner and watch the activity out front by the neighbor's, so the chain link is a plus in that respect. The squirrels learned pretty quick not to run across the top of the fence. The only time I've had a problem is when one neighbor acquired a pretend-dog that likes to come by our adjoining corners and harass EL D (and me or anyone or any other pet in the vicinity).

From what I have read, it is 2 in coach and 1 more in first class. I would recommend making sure it's a large plane, as they will allow more dogs, maybe 3 if it's a big plane.

My mum has one of these, though a bit different.A good friend of hers, sadly no longer with us of the Taysenji Basenjis brought it back for her when she spent time living in Zambia many years ago. It will be passed down to me when my mum is no longer here as it has sentimental values and I will never be parted with it.

You are lucky that she did not got hit by the electric wire which is usually in these fences. The voltage is quite high with sheep fences, as the wool does clam the shock down. If the sheeps are supposed to stay in, they need a fast hit. If this goes to your dog he will be terrified for the rest of his life. This happened to Gromit when he was about 9 months old. He still is scared of Sheep and Horses…. Regards, Esther

Hi Pat, how's things? The breeder is KIPENZI. Your right, she's gonna pick out the most placid male. Kaycee is so laid back and nothing phases her, i want a boy who will be the same. He's black/white. Kaycee is red\white. Turns out that her dad was originally from Kipenzi. He's absolutely beautiful.

Seren Jane doesn't make too many sounds, only occassionaly when we've picked her up from the groomer does she sound a bit like a baby. Not her favorite thing. Now she does make a low growling sound if you acciently roll on her at night or try to move her over in the bed, real grumpy then. She does seem to enjoy listening to the sounds of other basenji's that I've found on the Internet.

Jack also hides his treats in the couch he buries it in the couch or somewhere, then digs it up a few minutes later and eats it. and you CANT CANT CANT watch him hide it he HATES that! lol Geoff and I have to cover our eyes before he'll calm down and hides it. lol. He does the licking dry, rolls in the carpet wherever i dry my hair after a shower (for the smell i think) squats to pee, scared of the sweeper…and does the B500 to the couch and bites the blanket too (just like Tosca). Its too funny...and he LOVES to play Peek-a-Boo with Aiden in a giant box...He is SO Funny!!! I love it!!
