Dogs that were fine in crates with other dogs crated next to them are not always happy to be crated on their own. My current boy had been very good in his crate for three years, but with 4 or 5 other breathing bodies close to him. In new surroundings at our house, he found the crate intolerable and ripped up everything inside it, while working himself into a frenzy. Even with a nice meaty bone, we found it impossible to leave him for any length of time. (we did not crate him when we were home) We weren't long working on leaving him loose, and except for a very few incidents he has not abused our trust….....in fact, he is the best Basenji I have had in terms of not destroying things. Interestingly, he is fine if we go out for a few hours, giving him a roller ball with treats as we exit. He is less happy if we are outside where he can see us. He wants to be where we are, which is not always possible, e.g. if one is mowing the lawn, blowing snow, etc.

Not sure how far that is from Raleigh, but one of my whippet friends has a very nice boarding kennel in Raleigh and might know of some home care people. Her website is: http://tcanimalcare.com/

Would be interested in a club but wouldn't take my dog to that park on a dare. Two friends' dogs contracted giardia there, and the one time I went to check it out it reeked of dog poo.

Here's what I've ordered for Thabo. The fact they seem to have persuaded a basenji to wear it long enough to photograph was a plus in my book. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HE189G/ref=oh_emp_details_o02__i01

@Shaye's: Just give your boy his space, gently try to pick him up and quit when he resists, rub his belly any way he will let you, and eventually, he'll calm down for you probably. I would respectfully disagree with quitting when he resists…....you are then reinforcing the resistance. If you can anticipate and release before you get resistance, that would be best, but if he starts to resist best to wait a moment and release as soon as he is quiet, which tells him what behaviour will get him what he wants. Reward profusely when he doesn't resist. When you know they don't like something, look for a tiny bit of success and build on it gradually. When you do get acceptance, don't insist on maintaining the position for very long. :)

A lot of research shows that dogs develop male hormone driven behavior well before a year, and that neutering after the behavior will not stop them. But the decrease in hormones will help making training those behaviors far easier, so early or late, you can usually get a bump in decreasing unwanted behaviors. Glad all is well.

On rural shows I sort of agree, but the Birmingham one staggered me - Birmingham is a city of over one million people, and we had just come off the infamous Spaghetti junction (Gravelly Hill Interchange) https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSR4yknx1DwSXPzt5jCPDicc6x4dhQknJQfXQlZEv0ukFnetOclEQ and were still a mile and a half from the show…oh, and I wasn't driving.

Agree with all above - you also might like to try mixing a teaspoon of sardine/tuna with a little water and spreading it over the food. Good luck!

Gale Thompson, Undercover Basanjis, is not my breeder but she shows incredible dedication. One time I contacted her about a BRAT rescue that her dog was 3 generations back. She didn't own parents or grandparents, but she offered to foster, find a foster and PAY for the spay/neuter and donate in the interest of that dog. Recently we had a family needing to place their dogs– one came from Gale's line. She spent a lot of time helping find the "out of the country" breeder and a co-breeder to help get the dogs back to them and again offered money and help for dogs simply in her line.

Oakley ( at 18 months) has this past year shed out of season in addition to his winter shedding….in my house you just never know when it's gonna happen...but when it happens you know it.

The majority of items they sell have free shipping (completely free, no handling fee), but you will also see that some items do have a shipping fee. In my experience, whether there is a shipping fee or not isn't based on the dollar amount, however small, but rather size, weight, and more than likely how much it cost them to get the item.

@TMartin: www.dogtagart.com They have a number of different tags and you can even create a custom one. Here is the one we bought Loki months ago. I loved this website because my husband can be really picky about things and we were actually able to find a tag he liked after literally weeks of searching! http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q483/TDamian/Doglando.jpg that's a great pic of Loki!! love the tag! did you submit it to dogtagart?? they will love it and display it on their facebook and website!

Jennifer, I didn't trust my Basenji off leash until she was 17 and then she could surprise me. I only managed to train others to be steady around sheep when they were 11/1 2 Joanne, I love your image of them trotting off together on the great adventure.

Having been hospitalized lately, I left an instruction sheet out for each of my Basenjis in case my husband also had an emergency hospital visit. This form would have been very useful and saved me a lot of writing. Thanks for posting. I'm not aware that our own KC has such a leaflet.

@Knipper: @Krunzer, Which Peaveymart? I tried to find it in their catalogue, but all they have is wire mesh. We hope to do Cricket's back yard next year, but if I can find this now, I'll get it! I think it is called Wire Mesh or something similar to that….I wanted to say wire fabric though. We got it in the PeavyMart here in Grande Prairie.
