I took my B to Gentle Care in Cary. They were really great with Cody, even with his quirks.

Good luck on getting a picture when she is still, if she is anything like our 2 she won't be still very muvh. Our Bitty does this thing, when she comes up on the bed at bedtime she will flop down facing directly away from us and then bend her head back mover her shoulder to look at us.

Good old mental stimulation! I always get worried when the get so close…and feel lucky when they get away. Last thing I want is to clean bloody feet and mouths afterwards!!

Absolutely wizard, birds, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, I've even known a few to take on possums and raccoons. Egads! Tough little buggers, aren't they?

Oakley would eat sour smarties or sweet tarts over sweet potatoes or zucchini 100%. I often think it's weird how similar his taste for sour and tart candies resembles mine!! I do however like fruits and vegetables more than him..

Whether we are gone fifteen minutes or 5 hours, Shaye runs to greet us and goes up on her two feet once or twice, bouncing around. Gemma comes to greet us but stays down, "talking" a little to let us know she is happy to see us. This is followed by them shadowing us to the counter to see if we are just putting down purses or shopping bags, or have anything for them. Once that's decided, they go back to whatever they were doing before we got back home, usually lying around.

So, I've talked with Oakleys breeders and met for play date with some of their pups…things went really well, Oakley took really well to the other pups with me around, so much so I really didnt exist. One pup just clicked and fit perfectly, she would be the perfect temperament and disposition to compliment Oakley and our life...so I'm really glad I got to see what works and what doesn't...one female pup and him just couldn't click the whole time, tensions and such...the dog I originally fell for is a retired female and we tried that as well, didn't go as well- I think Oakley is too abrasive for older females to tolerate...he's a big puppy and acts like it. That cemented for me that a pup really has the best chance of working out. I learned a lot about basenji interaction and behavior, possible issues to be aware of and really just more about Oakley.. It was a very insightful visit and I feel more confident that Oakley will accept the right dog into our home, the decision is really up to me now to see if I can part with Oakley and I being two peas in a pod....still a little worried about having two and not yet having gone through the "having children" phase...the thought of eventually being pregnant with two seems more daunting than one...perhaps some insight into that would be helpful!

I once had the receptionist at the vets where I go (we were arguing about sedation for an OFFA x-ray, I refused, she said I HAD to) tell me that if I didn't like it to go somewhere else. I called the vet directly and told him what she said to me, and informed him that I would take my five dogs and (at that time) 3 cats and he would lose all my business. I stated HE was the vet and if that decision about the sedation was further required, he would be the one to make it or tell me to go elsewhere. (I liked the vet by the way, he's good with the animals, listens to what I have to say, gives me his opinion and is willing to work with me and learn) Funny how nice she became to me after that. We get along great now. While the receptionist may be frontline and know what is going on, she/he is not a vet and doesn't know what is going on with your animal-only you do. I don't think anyone needs to worry what the frontline staff thinks or does, as long as the vet knows. Leave it to the vet to talk to his staff. But, since you weren't thrilled with the vet either, I would find another one. Just becuase a vet knows a certain breed, doesn't mean they are always good either. This one had never treated a basenji before, but he had a willingness to learn about them when I first came to him. So now, he not only has mine, he also has a fellow breeders to deal with and she has over 10. Just willing to learn and being good expanded his client base. It's a smart man/woman who realizes this.

Our winters here in Australia are not like yours in New England - we don't get snow where I am, but do get hard frosts. Cold days are 14C, but situated where I am on the side of a hill, the wind off the snow area 75 kms further up the valley can get a bit lazy - prefers to go through you rather than round you!! And as we all know - Basenjis don't 'do' cold!! My Swedish boy is cuddled up in his bed in front of the heater beside me. Silly boy still gets his summer coat in our winter!!

  • Does your Tri Basenji like the sun or avoid laying in direct sunlight?

Shaye loves the sun - will lie out in the heat for as long as she can get it. Gemma, being a basenji/sheltie mix and furrier, lies on the cool tiles on the porch, and when the sun hits her, she heads for the A/C. At the beach, Shaye lies in the hot sand in the sun until I get her into the shade, and because she is also a heat seeking thing, wants to be totally under covers to sleep at night. Stands to reason the tris and b/w's would absorb more heat and not prefer it as much as the r/w's do.

Wow, I am surprised to see so many posts regarding the aggression thing. I have a 3 yr. old who thinks she is the queen of the universe, and is totally the alpha with her b-mix sister, but she plays well with others at dog parks and elsewhere, with the exception that there are certain B's she will get snarky with. We've never been able to figure out what it is she doesn't like in some of her own kind. It doesn't happen every time but it makes the other owners nervous when it does happen, so I have stopped going to the dog park where the B's she has trouble with go. There are very rare situations with other type dogs. The only time she will start to "hair up" in a park is when she is tired from running and resting behind my legs at a picnic bench. If a dog comes up to get to her by going around my legs then, she will growl and threaten; I believe this is "go away I'm resting and get away from my person" because she doesn't come out fighting but sounds very serious about the whole thing. Also, if another dog tries to "mate," she will quickly sit down, turn around and snarl her displeasure, but won't push it any further. I do think basenjis may not have much patience with dogs they consider their inferiors.
