Mr Baroo and the Bunny

Basenji Talk
  • Mr Baroo, Bitty and Aunt Sable were out in the fenced backyard, almost a half acre, for their noon romp. Karin , loking out the back door, asked if the pups were out and i said yes, she replied come look, there is a rabbit on the hill. Looking out i saw the bunny start toward the NW corner of the yard, out of the corner of my eye i saw a red streak heading up the hill, Baroo had sighted bunny. Bunny runs toward the east fence line, Baroo about 15 feet behind. The two of them, bunny and Baroo, ran back and forth across the hill 4 times before the tiring bunny found a hole in the chain link big enough to sqeeze through. The cutest thing was that Bitty, who has never displayed a hint of prey drive, joined the chase on the second lap, running sholulder to shoulder with Baroo, which I'm sure added to the poor rabbit's anxiety. As I said, fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, the rabbit got away, by the fluff of his little cotton tail.

  • Good old mental stimulation! I always get worried when the get so close…and feel lucky when they get away. Last thing I want is to clean bloody feet and mouths afterwards!!

They keep in training by running the B-500 every night before bedtime.

We are also finding that Kipawa baroos when he sees us after we have been out of the home. I think he is trying to tell us something like "how dare you leave me".

@nobarkus: That video was taken by Susan Kamen Marsicano of APU Basenjis (since 1973). I've been friends with Susan since 94. She has Basenji off spring all over the world. She had 8 Basenjis, she just lost a 16 year old 2 days ago so now it's seven. She's a really good artist too. http://www.apubasenjis.com/ Really nice website! Thanks for sharing.

@AJs: K, another story I alluded to somewhere else: AJ and I were in Bradenton, Florida spending the night one time waiting for a load. I took him for a nice long walk and on our way back to the truck, there was a Cuban family (Mom, Dad and about 4-year-old boy) who were watching AJ. AJ just loves children, so I asked if it would be okay for him to say "HI" to the little boy. The mom told me he was terrified of dogs because apparently when he was tiny, he was bitten. We were standing about 15 feet apart and I was keeping AJ on a tight lead right next to my leg. The little boy was peeking out from behind his mommy's leg, just staring at AJ with those huge black eyes. As his mom and I were talking, he edged out slowly from behind her leg…slowly....slowly... AJ just sat down and waited for him. Eventually, the little boy worked up the courage and approached AJ on his own. After a few minutes, he was petting AJ and getting licks and loves from my dog. His mom was so astounded all she could do was stand there and stare. His dad said something in Spanish to his wife, then Mom translated, "We never thought he'd ever be next to a dog. He's always been so afraid of them. This is good!" Cheers Way to go AJ!!
