Mr Baroo and the Bunny

    Yesterday afternoon, I let Mr Baroo, Bitty and Aunt Sable, our elderly Shiba Inu, out into the backyard for their early afternoon run. About 10 minutes later, Karin asked if the pups were out, and I said yes. She said, 'Come look, there's a rabbit on th e hill'. As I looked out I saw the rabbit hopping toward the NW corner of the yard, which is about a half acre in size. Suddenly I saw a red and white streak headding up the hill, Baroo had spied the bunny. The bunny dashed toward the east side of the yard, with Baroo about 15 feet behind. The disappeared from sight to reappear in a second going back in the opposite direction, with Baroo closing the gap slightly. They circled the maple tree next to the west fence, and recrossed the hill, this time with Bitty, who had never before displayed any sort of prey drive, also in hot persuit. Three laps later the rabbit spied a tiny gap in the chain link and squeezed through just ahead of the 2 B's, leaving them standing with their front feet up on the fence watching the rabbit hop away. I can only guess how frustrated they were.

    Yes, typical prey drive. There you are he has got it and demonstrated it rather well to you.

    Rabbits have learned to come onto our garden before the Basenjis are let out in the morning! Result - some very frustrated Basenjis!

    They keep in training by running the B-500 every night before bedtime.

    Nothing cuter than baby baroos. If you can get him right as he is about to do it you might be able to give it a command. I was able to train both Ruby and Brando to give it on command for their dinner. It is pretty funny because Brando's baroo is so completely different than Ruby's …hers is so melodic, and his is so deep and masculine.

    @nobarkus: That video was taken by Susan Kamen Marsicano of APU Basenjis (since 1973). I've been friends with Susan since 94. She has Basenji off spring all over the world. She had 8 Basenjis, she just lost a 16 year old 2 days ago so now it's seven. She's a really good artist too. http://www.apubasenjis.com/ Really nice website! Thanks for sharing.

    @AJs: K, another story I alluded to somewhere else: AJ and I were in Bradenton, Florida spending the night one time waiting for a load. I took him for a nice long walk and on our way back to the truck, there was a Cuban family (Mom, Dad and about 4-year-old boy) who were watching AJ. AJ just loves children, so I asked if it would be okay for him to say "HI" to the little boy. The mom told me he was terrified of dogs because apparently when he was tiny, he was bitten. We were standing about 15 feet apart and I was keeping AJ on a tight lead right next to my leg. The little boy was peeking out from behind his mommy's leg, just staring at AJ with those huge black eyes. As his mom and I were talking, he edged out slowly from behind her leg…slowly....slowly... AJ just sat down and waited for him. Eventually, the little boy worked up the courage and approached AJ on his own. After a few minutes, he was petting AJ and getting licks and loves from my dog. His mom was so astounded all she could do was stand there and stare. His dad said something in Spanish to his wife, then Mom translated, "We never thought he'd ever be next to a dog. He's always been so afraid of them. This is good!" Cheers Way to go AJ!!

    @MacPack: I learned some years ago that black basenjis get much hotter than reds, that black coat absorbs the sun. My 14 year old red girl was going strong when the 1 1/2 year old black boy drug us under a tree and threw himself down in the cool grass, panting. I always take water along, and try and make sure they aren't overheated, but I see so many people out running with a dog (here in Florida) with no water for the dog. It makes me sad and angry! Also among red basenjis, some can stand the heat much better than others. One of my girls, her son, and also her mother wilt very easily in the heat. They pant easily, and like to seek out the shade quickly.
