New Info on Mr Baroo

Basenji Talk

  • When we were contacted by BRAT that they had a 3 to 5 yo male for adoption we jumped at the chance. Upon bringing him into our home we immediately realized that he was, if anything, not even a year old, totally puppyish acting. Well, he's been with us for about 4 months and although he has all the characteristics of a Basenji he is a mix, and a wonderful mix. To be totally honest he is beginning to look like a small Dalmation but with all the outward appearences of a B, upright ears, red and white, white chest blaze, tight curled tail with a white tip, 4 white feet, wrinkled forhead, the whole package. He loves to run and play chase with Bitty his 6 yo 'sister', insists on sleeping under covers with me at night and is lead baratone in the baroo chorus. So, he may not be pure bred Basenji, he is all Basenji to us.:p

  • Photos please!!!!

  • Yeah I wanna see pics!

  • i agree. i can't believe you wrote all that cute stuff about him and then didn't let us see him.

congrats on your new family member

  • Thank you for rescuing this basenji. I am glad your here.

    Talking Bitty gets a buddy
Hi Y'all. It has been a long while since we have posted here. Our old forum name was BittysDaddy. But that has changed, as you can see. About a month ago Liz, with BRAT, called and asked if we coiuld take a 3 yo red male to foster.

Okay you got this dog in Jan. Sorry but six mos ago if you are right, the dog would only have been a 5 or 6 mo old puppy… not only BRAT but your vet would have been able to tell by teeth and other things the difference between an adult dog and a 6 mo old puppy. Really. How much, pound wise and height, has he actually grown in this 6 mos? I wouldn't be surprised if the dog was younger than 3... rough living can make them appear older. But I'd be pretty shocked that BRAT, the shelter, the vets who saw the dog before you got it, and your vet all mistook a 5 or 6 mo old pup for a mature dog.

So I looked at your album and I am falling out. RED DOGS, lots of red dogs, lol. I love it. He looks basenji to me, save the not curled tail in a pic or 2. But what wonderful pics of all your gang. However, dude, get some color in there. And to think my husband complained I only had red dogs or black dogs. LOL of course now we have Cara, a tri. Oh wait, red and black in one package.. does that not count as a different color though?

  • What an interesting dog!

@rugosa LOL on the pig ear. But it's not just a basenji trait. One night it was storming and one of my rotts was fixated on one of the bedroom windows. I looked, there was a toad on the screen! The dog was so intense about wanting to get to it, my daughter went out in the rain and moved it from the window. From then until she died, day or night, I had to let her in the bedroom when it stormed to make sure the once-in-a-lifetime visitor wasn't there. They think more than many people give them credit for.

@nobarkus: That video was taken by Susan Kamen Marsicano of APU Basenjis (since 1973). I've been friends with Susan since 94. She has Basenji off spring all over the world. She had 8 Basenjis, she just lost a 16 year old 2 days ago so now it's seven. She's a really good artist too. http://www.apubasenjis.com/ Really nice website! Thanks for sharing.

@AJs: K, another story I alluded to somewhere else: AJ and I were in Bradenton, Florida spending the night one time waiting for a load. I took him for a nice long walk and on our way back to the truck, there was a Cuban family (Mom, Dad and about 4-year-old boy) who were watching AJ. AJ just loves children, so I asked if it would be okay for him to say "HI" to the little boy. The mom told me he was terrified of dogs because apparently when he was tiny, he was bitten. We were standing about 15 feet apart and I was keeping AJ on a tight lead right next to my leg. The little boy was peeking out from behind his mommy's leg, just staring at AJ with those huge black eyes. As his mom and I were talking, he edged out slowly from behind her leg…slowly....slowly... AJ just sat down and waited for him. Eventually, the little boy worked up the courage and approached AJ on his own. After a few minutes, he was petting AJ and getting licks and loves from my dog. His mom was so astounded all she could do was stand there and stare. His dad said something in Spanish to his wife, then Mom translated, "We never thought he'd ever be next to a dog. He's always been so afraid of them. This is good!" Cheers Way to go AJ!!

The only thing I would be concerned about with a Dachshund would be the possiblity of it having some back damage with the rough play of a basenji…or even trying to do the same acrobatics that Bs do. I have known some folks who had a lot of problems with disk and spine problems with Doxies...but I don't know if that is typical. Something to think about though...
