@jengosmonkey said in How to Add Sparkle to Your Holiday: . I hooked them both up to a brace A very long time ago, before I had Basenjis, I used to walk and train dogs for people. My constant companion was a small GSD crossbred, and she helped me teach many dogs recall in a similar fashion. I would attach them together by the collars, and she would bring the dog with her when I called. One time, her head was down and the other dog pulled away, and she slipped her collar. Tippy understood what had happened. From then on, when she had to stop and turn the other dog, she sat back on her hindquarters like a roping horse, held her head high to retain the collar, then brought the dog back to me! Dogs are smart!

@tanza Oh yes. I give her 1/3 cup blue buffalo puppy kibble, 1 tbsp wet blue buffalo puppy, 1 tbsp yogurt or cottage cheese, (alternating) and if I se any sign of dandruf or dryness in her fur, I also add in a few drops of olive oil. I have chicken and vegetables every night, and I've been preparing my chicken unseasoned since I got rogue so I can use it for training on occasion, so sometimes if she's being stubborn I'll bury some tiny shreds of chicken in her food to get her to eat, or sometimes I'll do the same thing with some other high value treats. I don't feed her in a crate, but I've moved her bowl into my room so she's lessdistracted at mealtime, and she has a safe place to eat when my niece comes over. Rogue plays nice with my niece outside, but indoors, she's kind of a really big squeeky toy, so we have to watch her constantly. I also, on the rarest occasions, will give her a little tiny pinch of american, or sharp cheddar cheese. That seems to get her really excited. She doesn't get excited about cottage cheese, but american or sharp cheddar? She goes nuts. fagedabodit. And she get chews and kongs in the crate, but never meals. And she doesn't spend much time in there anymore since she's been house trained. She just sleeps in my bed. In fact, she's passed out next to me right now.

@zande said in Tyrion does not like the snow: Mine have always loved the rare spells of snow - and it has an added bonus - Send them out to play in it and then clip toenails ! The quicks will be driven RIGHT back in by the cold. You can get the nail nicely shortened with no screeching from the Basenji - What a GREAT idea!!! I love it when we share nuggets of wisdom like this. Too bad we never have snow here in Florida...

@zande said in Is Mango a Besenji?: No way is that a Podengo ! (IMNSHO !) You can't see this little one ending up looking like the pups in this photo? I think it's probable.... but we know a DNA test will tell for sure.

Now I look again Portuguese Podengo could well be in there to a large extent. Lovely feisty little dogs. One smooth one I know quite well is very similar in size to a Basenji but shorter in the leg

@docgonzo said in Which dog fits me best?: There is no other dog like a Basenji. Nearly every breed from poodles to pit bulls have retained approximately 8% of wolf genetics. Being an “Ancient” and the “daddy” of most Of today’s domesticated breeds, the Basenji retains approximately 24% of the Wolves genetics. A recent study also determined that of all breeds the Basenji has one of the largest “play drives” (You will find this out quickly) which was key and essential to the domestication of all dogs. The Basenji is truly unique genetically and in in temperament. This dog responds quickly to kindness and a soft touch, NOT yelling and physicality. YOU WILL NOT WIN A BATTLE OF WILLS. Adapt & overcome. LOL, This info will come in handy for the next couple of years. Congratulations, amazing animals. So true. Even when life defeats them they revenge themselves. My 13 year old B tried unsuccessfully to jump up on the bed. When she unceremoniously fell off - twice, she turned around and bit the doona before running out of the room.

I can see why someone would think there was Terrier, but I'm not so sure about Basenji. (The only way to know for sure is to do a DNA test.) Both of your dogs look very similar. What breed, or mix, is the older one?

@jengosmonkey said in Show Us Your Tail!!: I've found that a basenji tail is a lot like a paper clip. It can hold things... doodle often seems to hold her leash in her tail... :D
