They are the perfect dog, fast, scent & sight hound, pointer and really smart- all of which can make a challenging pet or the best hunting dog you could own.

When my husband and I got togeather, Dakota, my first b, would nip him if he moved the slightest bit during the night. One night at 3:00a.m. they finally had it out. Hubby pushed him off the bed, Dakota jumped back up growling. They went back and forth for at least 15 minutes. Dakota finally sat on the floor for a few minutes then jumped back up, curled up and went to sleep. He never nipped him again.

When my husband left for a week our b Trixie went absolutely bonkers!!! I thought I was going bonkers as well. She chewed up our carpet in our dining room (we now have hard wood floors) and in our bedroom and she went from window to window crying and looking for him. One night we made the mistake of putting the phone to her ear and he talked to her and that really upset her. He actually cut his trip short by a couple days just to get home to see his baby!! Thank god!! Hope he does'nt leave any time soon! She does love her daddy!!!!!

my mother-in law is visiting and trixie who usually is good for one baroo every morning has not done it since she arrived. She has however done her tazmanian or devil talk and my mother-in-law was scared!! We laughed and removed Trixie to our bedroom. It was obviously past her bedtime!! lol

When we got married I was the dog enthusiast. We had always had dogs when I was growing up. DH grew up with a pet box turtle! So for most of our married life, the dogs were mine. However, DH has wanted a basenji for years and he is totally smitten with Cory. In fact, he is the one that told me that he thought that Cory was lonely and we should consider getting a second basenji to keep her company. THIS from a man who made me promise several years ago that we'd never own two dogs at once again.

I Think The Scratching Is From Her Burying Her Toys, Chew Bones And Other Surprises All Over The House And She Can't Remember Where They Are.

The only sweat glands on a dog are on the feet. They keep their foot pads supple, but also sent mark the trail.
I actually like the way goober smells. Probably because I grew up with a dish called Frito and Chili pie.
My old dog Missy had the standard stinky dog smell which I wasn't too fond of, but I didn't hate it enough to give her a bath more than once a month.

EL D is kind of like that. Not exactly camera shy. As soon as he hears me turn on the camera he starts to act up and won't sit nice or else shoves his nose in the camera. I've only got a few really decent pictures of him. 😞

The last couple of days the highs have been below zero (yesterday and this morning it was -14F/-26C when I let EL D out to go potty with two coats on). Yesterday in the early afternoon he whined and whined to go for a walk and I wasn't going to go but in the end said okay. Put his and my coats on and made it down the driveway and to the mailbox and he was pulling hard to turn around and get back in the house. He learned his lesson I guess - no more whining the rest of the day! 🙂

Love this picture! It's the same picture I could take of my own house…LOL! I have a bucket that the toys go in. I only wish-wish-wish that I could teach my furkids to put their toys away when they're done! Ha ha! Between dog toys and kid toys - It's insane! My son has finally learned to keep his stuff in "his" game room and shut door, but I am daily - pushing dog toys aside with my feet when walking thru the house! Ya gotta love 'em! 😃

Magnum's breeder is always willing to board. I've only had to do it once (for four days), but he came back his normal, happy self. Although I'm sure he didn't get the human lovin' he gets here at home, he got a lot of doggy interaction, which he doesn't get here at home.

Since Mag's breeder is within a 1/2-hour drive from us, it was a no brainer. I realize that that's not generally possible, but, if you're close enough, it's definitely something to check out.

Also, since we didn't get Magnum 'til he was over a year old, he was very acclimated to his breeder's environment. When we dropped him off, he was so happy to see his breeder and her family and his old-time buddies, he didn't even wave good-bye to us 😉 . That was important to me, too. And the rate of $5 a day didn't hurt either.

I would have to agree with the others. Surgery is pretty tricky especially if the dog is on meds. Some medication is mood altering. If you could possibly wait at least a week to bring in the new dog that would be ideal. Males usually recover pretty quickly and are back to normal within a week. This will give your pooch some much needed rest & healing time.

To introduce the dog I would have them meet in neutral territory some sniffing & such & afterwards I would take a nice long long long walk around your neighborhood…like 2hours at least. Let them get used to being together with you on your walks. I would even make it a routine for a while until they get used to the pack order.

I would also suggest RULES from Day #1. Establish the rules of the house so both dogs understand that you're the boss & these are the rules...My rules I don't allow the dogs to hoover while I make their meals. They have to be sitting calmly until I'm done. They eat in separate crates & before I put their dish down they must sit & give me eye contact. I do the same for treats and toys...everything is given only if they sit calmly & give eye contact. There's no jumping on me EVER...if they do this they get my back which they hate because they love mom's attention 🙂

My boy Cody loves bread. He has eaten most of a loaf of white bread while I was at work. He was fine, but the vet recomended setting out extra water, because he would be thirsty. He was able to digest it with no ill effects. I now have to have the bread up on top of a very tall cabinet about 5 feet off the floor.

BDawg-you said it better then I ever could 😃 it is a true marriage in every way, shape, & form. There isn't ANYTHING I wouldn't do or sacrifice for my two pooches. I told my DH that I would sooner give him up then my dogs 😃 😃 I'd never leave my dogs no matter what. He told me we'd have a bitter battle over the…lol 😃

BTW-I know EXACTLY what you mean by that "bond" they trust you to protect them & take care of them & love them.

When I gave EL D his birthday (Dec 21) / Christmas presents (several stuffed toys and some treats) he had such fun tearing open the wrapping. And even more fun tearing out the squeekies 🙂 He had one toy torn apart before he even opened some of the other presents!

She heeded the warning and went away while I kept playing with him, no scuffle. A child is going to have know theses signs as well.

This is how Tyler looks when he has settled in to sleep and Zoey wants to come in an "nest" before she settles. Zoey has learned to heed the warning also and doesn't disturb Ty when he's already settled.
