The Lincoln, Neb.-based company said Monday that the raw, frozen food is being recalled because it could be contaminated with salmonella. The recall includes three-pound packages of chicken medallions, six-pound packages of chicken patties and two-pound packages of chicken chubs. Initially, the company recalled only packages with a best-by date of Nov. 10, 2010. Now packages with best-by dates of Oct. 29 and Nov. 9, 2010, are also being recalled. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Pets can also become ill if they consume the bacteria. I'm glad to know that both bags I used last had dates in December/2011. Hopefully they get this issue under control.

Yes, we could control it with the diam. earth, but rather not, their skin gets so dry, I only use it in my yard and coop, spread it all over your yard, on a nonwindy day and it will kill anything and everything, inlcuding fleas, it basically dries them out. I even put it in the feed for the chickens, helps with worms. Although unknown to most, we all consume diam. earth as humans, in pancake mixes, some flour mixes and things like that..keeps critters from invadiing while in storage.. I actually use Comfortis on the dogs, the only thing that seesm to work the best.

@pedro: is it true that basenji's normally get along better with the opposit sex?>!! It is typically recommended that it is best to male/females rather then two males or two bitches. Obviously if male/females they are both spayed/neutered…. as accidents happen.

Sophie was like that as a puppy. By 16 weeks she was happily going on 2 mile hikes and she was probably doing closer 4 miles with the running up and down the trail. She set the pace and did as much as or little as she wanted. If she got tired then we were willing to carry her but she just had a ton of energy.

No, I meant it takes about a week to get the test and usually 2 to 3 weeks for the results once they are received back at the lab. Please read my post about breeding on the other thread

That is how my girls' seasons were when they were young also. Usually the spring season was in March. She may have been around some bitches coming into heat at the show, and that pulled her in. Ivy was spayed before she went to more normal cycles, Blondie and Luna also had wierd cycles until they were about three or four. Then they kind of went back to a more predictable fall cycle. Bella always has been a fall girl (except for the year that she had her litter)…so there is definintely some room for variation. A lot of people have found that those spring cycles are shorter, and often not productive for breeding.

Never heard anything bad about raw eggs in the diet for Basenjis. However, my older male pukes even at the mention of eggs:(. My younger girl LOVES them, too much. (My loved but chubby one:))

When you say throat problem, is it an esophagus swallowing problem? My rescue boy has this but it is not quite Megaesophagus. He is on Prolisac 1/4 pill every day, Reglan 5 mg. every other day, intestinal prescription dog food both dry and canned though he eats mostly dry with a few tablespoons of canned added with quite a bit of water. He eats standing up-level as he eats from a bowl that is put on a coffee table. This is so the food will go down easier instead of bending over to eat. He was originally given steroids because the vets were not sure what he had, thought perhaps it was allergies, IPSID, etc. His symptoms were belching and spitting up both water and food. Sometimes he would also have extremely soft stools. The steroids and other things were not working so I took him to an Internist who had a test done that took pictures while he was eating/swallowing. This test showed the esophagus problem. He developed this problem when he was under a year old and he turned 3 in December. So far his symptoms are under control.

Ok, thanks! I will have to try that. This is our first winter together, so I wasn't sure if their coats changed during the season.
