Not sure if you would call it pink eye… however anything with the eyes is a cause for concern, IMO..... I would have her in for a check... and better yet if you took her to a specialist....

  • Yes, off to the vet, and let us know what he/she says please.

  • thanks, I will

  • Definitely an off to the vet kind of thing. Can you see if maybe she has a scratch in her eye? When Rio got scratched by the cat she woke up with lots of goop in her eye which was the first sign we had that she had been scratched.

    Sending healing thoughts your way.

  • Yes, most animals can get pink eye. It can also be transferred to humans. I got it as a kid from one of our horses.

The tell tale sign (other than the excessive, crustie eye boogies) is the red rim on the inside of the bottom lid. It's itchie and generally uncomfortable. Eye washes (artificial tears) help, but they sting when applied on a 'pinked ' eye.

Hope it's not a scratched eye.

  • Our dog Murphy has this same thing. Globs of goo on each of his eyes. We thought it was just because he was away for a week while we were on Vaca. But we woke up this morning and it was almost glued shut. White crusty stuff all over each eye. Wiped it off with a washcloth but keeps coming back. Doesn't seem to bother him though, he doesn't scratch at it or anything, just shuts his eyes a lot. any suggestions?

  • Forgot to add that we don't have any cats and the person who had Murphy for the week didn't have or doesnt have cats either. They had a cat a month or so ago, but can Cat hair or dander affect Murphy still so that he gets irritated? =(

  • Needs to be seen by a Vet, could be a number of things… and only a Vet will know and be able to prescribe meds

  • Yes, get to a vet asap..eye things are not something to let go. IMO

Nice to hear some good news on the forum for someone, such a shame sometimes even the simple things take time to sort out, glad your eye problems are solved to the point of being a possible allergy to something rather then being something more serious, in saying that allergies are a pain in the butt. Yay for Becca and Tucker. jolanda and Kaiser

Yes, bronzing is quite common in Basenjis and often it is mistaken for possible beginning of PRA. I had a bitch like that and so was her son. You need a good eye specialist that understands and knows the breed. So, yes, that is good news for your boy….. especially seeing there is PRA in his pedigree (and my bitch & her son carried some of the same dogs in their pedigree so I am quite familar with the bloodlines)

Of course required for artificial… reread and don't know where you got I didn't know that. I said: As for proving, if you are not using semen, you don't have to test generally. Pretty clear I know if you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to test. But you ALSO have to test when producing lots of litters. I saw no reason to get into the specifics there. But let me state it clearly so you don't argue more on item that has nothing to do with the issue.. If you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to do DNA. If you do live cover, generally you do NOT have to do DNA unless you 1. use more than one stud 2. the stud produces a certain number of litters (not looking up number) and a few other situations. And Pat, chill, really. I didn't say looks was the ONLY. My point, which I stated repeatedly, is that the African dogs also don't KNOW for sure if pure basenji.

My first Basenji would have nice bright white eyes. I would take her mnt biking with me and her eyes would be red and watery. My other 2 never experienced this. It's probably allergies. The older I get, the worse my allergies get. I have also developed new allergies. Things like Russian Olive never bothered me, now my eyes start flowing and my sinuses become highly irratated. If the concentration is high, I have trouble breathing. Talk your vet about OTC allergy medications and dosage. If your Basenji shows the same symptoms indoors and they do not improve, consider having your ducts cleaned and an electronic air cleaner installed.
