How far is too far to walk for a puppy?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I should know this, I'm sure.

We are walkers in this family. If the weather is good, verbalobe and I try to hit our mile circle at least three times during the day. Last week, when Zelda turned 13 weeks, we started taking her on one of those circuits. She did great. We had been doing shorter walks with her from day one (except when the snow was over her head).

Yesterday we took her on two of the circuits, several hours apart. Again, she was energetic, thrilled. She doesn't try to stop or dig her heels in. But she's only fourteen weeks and I know her bones and joints are still growing – FAST. Is there anything I should be watching for as signs she's doing too much? Or am I being an overprotective worrier?

  • As long as on the walks she is able to self pace and you are willing to carry her home when she's had enough, you are probably okay. The big issues for growing puppies are high impact activities that are not self paced by the puppy.

  • I suppose we can call galloping along laughing "self-pacing". :D

She seems to think a mile is for weenies and slowpokes.

  • Sophie was like that as a puppy. By 16 weeks she was happily going on 2 mile hikes and she was probably doing closer 4 miles with the running up and down the trail. She set the pace and did as much as or little as she wanted. If she got tired then we were willing to carry her but she just had a ton of energy.

Glad to hear she is doing better. My girl Lady when she was a senior did a number on her back which resulted in her being less inclined to jump up on things, although it didn't affect her balance or hind legs.

Yes, she's a wonderful lady. Always very helpful, and quick to reply to any concerns I have. If I thought it was an immediate problem I would have contacted her right away, but it sounds like a common phenomenon. Glad to have community feedback.

Glory has been with me almost two months - she is a little over 3 months old. I have switched her from a puppy food that was high in beef which she was eating when she came to us to a food that has chicken and vegetables. The soft stool doesn't bother her - there is never a sense of urgency to go - she only has a soft stool about twice maybe three times a day. She has gained almost 9 pounds since she came to us - she was very underweight and very young. Right now she weighs just under 16 pounds. We're doing stool testing every 2 weeks and except for the very first test, they are coming back O.K. I'm concerned that she may not be processing the nutrition from her food or that she will have chemical imbalances because of the loose stools. Am I worrying for nothing?

diahrea is a common sign. My guys both received oral dewormer meds as a standard Banfield Vet procedure for their wellness plan. This is not uncommon. Caesar was always leash walked as a puppy and he still got it. Dont let your basenji eat grass or drink water off out of anything but your water bowl. I have found that the vaccines for Giardia have never worked for either of my basenjis. It is typical for my guys. I didnt catch it at first because I thought Caesar's diahrea was from the training treats. You are a great basenji mommy for bringing yours in for testing!
