The end of the tail bothers me, and the 2 cat heads on top just add clutter. It is a very happy artwork for sure, just doesn't inspire me to want to own it.

No more shots for my guys. They go in for an annual check up and kennel cough, which can now be done by mouth. Becca was titred last year and Tucker done this time around. I am pretty sure the rabies shot was what caused our Toller to get lymphoma. Tucker also has CUPS,which is an autoimmune disorder so his body is already reacting to itself so it doesn't need overloading from needles.

Oh! I thought you meant what are the three Basenji beliefs (i.e. What they believe…) I was going to offer.... 1. I'm a really big dog 2. I'm a goat - I can eat anything 3. Everyone in the whole world wants to admire me... (Or 1-3 - Don't believe Galileo - the world revolves around me....)

My girl does most of the above listed things except that she does neck grab other dogs, but when she once caught and killed a squirrel, she grabbed and shook it, killing it immediately. Thereafter she was not at all interested in the prey and walked off. Another dog, a labradoodle, went over to grab the squirrel and started playing all over the field with it till its owner got it away from him. Shaye had no interest at all in this exchange because she did what she set out to do - catch and kill.

In addition to all of the above posts, there are definitely basenjis who will not be crated. I have one. Went through all the correct procedures trying to crate Shaye as a new puppy. We got her a wire crate, the right size, put a soft piece of our clothing in it, put it next to our bed at first so we could touch her through the bars - she screamed all the time she was in there, did her business wih her butt against the side so it would go outside, peed all over the place and sat in it, even though we were very slow and careful with it. The eventual result was she broke nearly all her baby teeth biting the crate, never calmed down in it, would not go in to eat, get treats or anything else. Her personality has never changed; she still backs off if she even sees crates other dogs are sleeping in. She is now nearly five, and she does not act like that when she needs to be kenneled at a daycare place, she seems to know it's different there, although if possible she will try to climb her way out at first. When she cannot, she will calm down and rest for the hour they put her in there during the day. Be patient, but if it just never works, so be it. Once Shaye got a little older and we got her a companion, she has been totally trustworthy while we are gone.

SHHHHHHH don't let my Kaiser know he should know how to get out of his crate. I suppose once they have escaped they will always have a go at doing it again. What a good solution to solve the problem getting another B, maybe Kaiser should escape. As Kaiser gets older I intend to test him being left out of his crate and hope he behaves as I always worry that if there's a fire he will be trapped. Jolanda and Kaiser

I love that you have a dog who eats grasshoppers. What great survival instinct to have, if anything ever happened where he was forced to fend for himself….being able to catch things like that would probably get him by for awhile. My dog and my cat used to team up and catch voles together, but Beo always let them go, without harming them....never ate them. I don't think he'd be able to survive very long on his own. Supposedly Beo's mom, when still in Africa, was very proficient at stealing and catching her own food. She continued to catch and eat little prey animals that went into their yard for a time after being brought into the US... before learning that humans provided food for her. .....a year or so back I found what I thought was a stray dog begging me to take her in. Skin and bones. Turned out she had been on her own for over month in the wild. She was only puppy who had been, literally, left behind by her owners when they decide to move. (I managed to get in touch with her original breeder who was lividly trying to find her after making a check up call and discovering what had happened ....and this is exactly why breeders should make calls every now and again to check on the pup). But, anyway, surviving in Alaska not the easiest thing for a puppy to do....she had some strong survival instincts. Most dogs die after a couple weeks, especially young inexperienced dogs.

@Heinz57: Any basenji owners in the Panama City, FL area? Our boy is 2 1/2 and is an only child. He loves to play. Hello! I live on the beach. I don't have any as of right now but want to get one soon. I am having hard time finding basenji breeder in PC area. How far did you have to travel to get your boy?

Ours love the heat but will definitely mix it up between sun and shade or come inside where it is cool (we have a dog door) In the winter, they can often be found by a heat vent if the fireplace is not on. There is a vent blowing right out below the sink here. [image: TiggerandRoo.jpg] And there is one here that is under the sideboard, but blows out really nicely across a wide area. Often a couple will be here. [image: photo.jpg] Then there is this silly dog that loves heat so much she will sit by the charcoal grill even in the summer. I felt ho hot her head was so I had to get the thermometer out. [image: IMG_0089.jpg]

Thankfully I am close to those who live above and below me because Oakley was horrible when his separation anxiety was bad..while he is super quiet its the whining, crying and howling from me leaving that others could clearly hear. I was always worried about it. Luckily, his anxiety is much much better and while sometimes he will have his moments, it's few and far in between.

From what I've seen (well bred) basenji puppies range from $900-$1500 depending on show quality. Like Krunzer said, puppies are cute but are A LOT of work. I've raised 2 basenjis and 2 goldens and while a lot of it is the same.. the basenjis seem to discover new ways to be mischievous that my goldens would never have dreamed of doing. Be prepared to replace many MANY things because odds are they will destroy them! Elliot isn't a climber but my last one was so even things high up on tables and counters were not safe from him. My current B is 10 months and going though the "I forgot every good behavior you taught me" phase. This includes trying to jump off the table at shows to play with the other dogs and the judge @______@. Now that I've strayed away from the topic.. A BRAT, rescue or retired show dog might be the best fit for you! I know of several breeders who will sell their retired show dogs because they simply can't keep them all. Before I got my first B I looked into purchasing a finished champion to learn how to show dogs with but ended up with a puppy.

LOL– looks like Chewwey knows just how handsome he is! The B&Ws are so elegant and, of course, the red just sets off that shiny coat and cute face.

Here are photos of three Serengeti dogs – Ch Serengeti Scarlet Sage, Ch Serengeti Cool Jazz of Woz and Ch Music City Serengeti Jazzman-- whose legacy lives on in quite a few dogs on this forum.

I think Oakley sees my point because he will look to the object my hand is touching…most often times at least..he never looks at my face for a cue of to acknowledge my words..if I throw something and tell him to go get it (and he doesn't see the throw)..it's impossible to direct him towards it..he's silly that way- no direction!
