Adult Basenji and Condos

Basenji Talk
  • Anyone own adult Bs that lives in a Condo? Any thoughts/advice or stories about living with them? How is the Howling?

  • Not all Basenjis are vocal…If you mean what we call a flat, (what's the difference between a condo and an apartment?) my boy lives in one - it's not ideal, but perfectly doable with plenty of walks. Somewhere (park in my case..) to let him off the leash so he can run is a must for me (others opinions may vary...)

  • Works great, but my Basenji is rather quiet. Not vocal at all other than the usual yawn.

I guess it depends on the Basenji. Mine will sleep all day, but even still he has a lot of room to roam around while I'm gone. He gets a walk a few times a day as well.

  • Thankfully I am close to those who live above and below me because Oakley was horrible when his separation anxiety was bad..while he is super quiet its the whining, crying and howling from me leaving that others could clearly hear.
I was always worried about it. Luckily, his anxiety is much much better and while sometimes he will have his moments, it's few and far in between.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

You're doing a great job introducing the cat to the basenjis, I would continue to do what you're doing, but don't leave them alone just yet. I would keep them in different rooms while you are away. Also, as another person said, the cat and the bird will be more of a challenge, since the cat is more likely to hunt the bird. Keep the supervision going with all three species. My basenjis always wanted to chase cats they saw outside, but did not chase the cats we had, because they had been socialized and they thought of the cats as part of the pack.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).
