Basenji Talk

They vary in size. I had dreams of a nice 18 pound bitch. My bitch won her championship, svelt, at a good 25 pounds. Her niece, our 2nd basenji, was this hard muscled machine and she topped 27 pounds at her best. (Sadly steroids from 4 yrs til death made her usually closer to 32 pounds.) I was at a show about 18 yrs ago and saw some part African basenjis that looked even bigger. But the European and US standards for size are almost identical (1 pound heavier for females in US). As for the show ring sizes difference, someone who shows internationally can answer. I just know from rescue that most that I see tend to be bigger, not smaller, than standard. The FCI (European) Standard: SIZE AND WEIGHT : Ideal height : dogs 43 cm (17 ins) at withers, bitches 40 cm (16 ins) at withers. Ideal weight : dogs 11 kg (24 lbs), bitches 9 1/2 kg (21 lbs). AKC Basenji: Height: 17 inches (male 16 inches (female) Weight: 24 pounds (male) 22 pounds (female)

@Cafu LOL on cutting leash.. I am certain they have retractable scissors in their gums. I have had mine cut leashes and cut straps to clothing that were so smooth, nothing else but scissors explains it (okay or razor blades). Hi everyone, Thanks for the advice. He does have a microchip, in addition to the GPS tracker. My main concern is not that he will not come back if he runs away, but that he could be run over by a car, since he likes to try to chase animals when we are out. Once when he escaped I was in a soccer field and I did lay down, as I was tired of trying to catch him. He did come check me out, so I agree that this works well. The tracker does work great, and at this point it is more of an insurance since I have not had any more issues with him getting out. He is almost two now, so I guess learned a lot. He outsmarted me constantly in the first year and a half, but now I am catching up to his tricks...I hope!

We feed raw meat (deep frozen) and like that a lot (our 2 sisters do, too!). Some vegetables too, like broccoli, cabbage, red beet, carrot, and the like. Both cooked and raw. We only bath them when they have rolled in something stinking, like a dead bird or so. When wet or muddy, we give them a rub with an old towel - they do the rest.

I am no expert but I looked at the photo before reading your post and I thought it was one. The classic white shoulders, upright ears, pointed nose and shape of face....I agree a profile view would add but it would not be hard to convince me this dog has some basenji genes.

A 3 ft fence... honestly my puppies would have been over that in a flash.

From what I've gathered, the dog is in a Basenji experienced home and she can stay there as long as she has to. The people that are caring for the dog have contacted know breeders in the area and have placed ads in the newspaper and online. Members from BRaT and Basenji Club of America have this cross posted. There are a lot of people, local and internationally, trying to help this Basenji girl find her way home.

My Basenjis are 6 and 3. We live in Florida and I usually run with them 1-2, sometimes 3 miles. My run is still just a trot for them, but I let them stop and sniff and potty whenever they need/want, and I just do squats while they do it :). On the 3-milers, I am sure to bring water or let them stop and drink at the beach which is the turn around point. I also wet them down before hand.

It depends. I've never had to crate another breed forever, but my one basenji would get destructive if left alone.. the 2nd one would pee on my bed. So crating it was. However, I'm home so they were rarely crated. My current basenji is fine loose as long as she's alone. So like they said, do it slow, confine to an area that is safe and see how it works out. But if you need to keep crating, most dogs sleep far more than people.. up to 17 hrs a day. Just exercise before and lots after so they aren't bored.

If you're looking for an "outside dog"... not the breed. If you are simply concerned about play time outside, then a 6 ft fence contains most. If you have a climber, they have inward leaning caps that stop that. I do know people who have used a good fence, then an invisible one a couple of feet in so the dog cannot dig under or climb over the fence.

Thank you for thinking of the puppy's needs. Please, contact the breeder first if you signed a contract. Responsible breeders have contracts, nearly all requiring you contact them if things don't work out. They may have other homes waiting already. If the breeder sold you the puppy without a contract, then there are a few here looking for a puppy that might be interested. Make sure you get references and vet references so that your puppy goes to a home, not someone wanting to use him for breeding in some puppymill. If you can't find a good home and you are willing to place without being paid, BRAT can be helpful in screening and getting into a good home in most cases. California has a separate basenji rescue also... http://www.basenjirescue.com/ ... however, I have no idea if they do fanconi testing. If your pup does not have clear parents, or at least one clear, please get him tested before you place him. A home getting a dog with a genetic disorder is more likely to abandon it if they don't know upfront what they are getting. If you have the parents' registration numbers or names, it is easy to verify if they were tested.

I'm with Deb! I can't stand when they are under the blankets but on top of the sheets! Makes me feel trapped. They have their assigned spots 😀 and will snark at each other if one of them crosses into the others spot

We are a family of 6 but if someone comes in the house he will take off then come back in to check them out. He does really like people. He plays quite a bit with other dogs and with the size family he's probably over socialized with the number of people my kids bring back and forth. LOL.. He seems to gravitate towards big dogs too which is pretty funny. I think he thinks he's bigger than he is. He really really loves to run so when we take him to the school field down the street he runs his heart out with the other dogs.
