Finding an Basenji Owner

Basenji Talk
  • Hi there, my name is Kyle. I recently bought a 5 month old Basenji Puppy online from a breeder in California. I thought I would have more time than I do with him to spend more of my time with him. He's such a good boy. He's house trained but I just don't have the time to take him out side and walk him. I don't have a yard for him to play in and he overall needs other dogs around. I would love to see him in a better home than what I can provide for him. If anyone knows of someone looking for a Basenji Puppy, please let me know. Im calling out for help from all Basenji owners.

  • Thank you for making this decision now, it is so important that a Basenji be brought up correctly. Are you looking to sell him to recover his purchase fee or do you simply want a good home? I could help if it is the latter. I volunteer with Basenji Rescue And Transport (BRAT), this organisation will definitely find a good Basenji home for your pup. Contact me at giza.1@mcsnet.ca and please attach a picture of him.

  • I assumed that you contacted the breeder about taking him back? Responsible breeders have requirements in their contract that says they will take their dogs back for its lifetime..... Your best bet is to surrender him to BRAT

  • Thank you for thinking of the puppy's needs.

Please, contact the breeder first if you signed a contract. Responsible breeders have contracts, nearly all requiring you contact them if things don't work out. They may have other homes waiting already. If the breeder sold you the puppy without a contract, then there are a few here looking for a puppy that might be interested. Make sure you get references and vet references so that your puppy goes to a home, not someone wanting to use him for breeding in some puppymill.

If you can't find a good home and you are willing to place without being paid, BRAT can be helpful in screening and getting into a good home in most cases.

California has a separate basenji rescue also... http://www.basenjirescue.com/ ... however, I have no idea if they do fanconi testing.

If your pup does not have clear parents, or at least one clear, please get him tested before you place him. A home getting a dog with a genetic disorder is more likely to abandon it if they don't know upfront what they are getting. If you have the parents' registration numbers or names, it is easy to verify if they were tested.

Wouldn't feel bad about the behavior of your basenji. I got mine six years ago and he acts a lot like yours. I kennel trained him and when I have company he goes in the kennel till he settles down. When I let him out I just tell people to be still till he checks them all out then he is fine. A lot of times he acts like he is going to attack me if he doesn't get his way vicious snarls and all, but I have learned it is just that an act . He also acted vicious around other dogs but after introducing them properly he gets along great. We have recently got him a new basenji mixed sister to play with, after the snarls and viciousness he loves her very much. I wouldn't be afraid to rehome your basenji, it at least give someone a chance to see what they can do.

@EMurata said in Advice for potential basenji owner: The "weather permitting" part of your statement wont work with a Basenji. My dog doesnt care if its 100 degrees out or 10, she needs constant exercise. If outside exercise isn't available for whatever reason, mental exercise is a good substitute. Basenjis are very clever and if you keep their minds busy it often serves to minimize or avoid destructive behaviour. You are not going to wear a fit Basenji out by walking him or her a couple of hours a day, but I have seen them perfectly content to kick back and relax after half an hour of demanding mental exercise! Clicker training can be useful here.....

I don’t bathe my three very often, they’re outside all the time and sleep in their dog house with hay and a heater when it gets cold, We bathe them when they get muddy at the park.

Yup - Tanza is correct. I have allergies to two of mine and don't have allergies to the other two - and 3 of my 4 are related. Oh and they definitely shed! Pat's recommendation of taking a t-shirt or towel with you and then sleeping with it is a great idea.

@Kipawa: Does this mean that you are thinking of breeding in the future? Hi Fran! "Apollo", as we are possibly going to use as his call name…will be a show dog. Me and Sarah will not be the ones showing him at this time, Therese is going to do it for us. We haven't yet worked out all the details but he will be allowed to continue in Kevin and Therese's breeding program. Basenjis are very special to us and we are excited to be a bigger part of Kevin and Therese's "family". Unfortunately at this point we are still waiting to find out which boy it will be...has to be a good fit all-around. There has been talk of possibly getting one of the "men in black" boys Therese will be getting from Lisa in CA. The waiting is so hard! I hope everyday reveals improvement for Darrel. Give Kipawa a huge B hug from us.
