I had a Rottweiler from a long line of herding titles, all the siblings. His only goat at sheep herding was to mark my leg. Even handler friends tried... nope. Wasn't wasting his energy on stupid sheep.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire.

Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money.

That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

I once thought two Basenjis was enough - but then they kept on coming, and eight were no more trouble !

(Just a lot more work and an increased need to remain the Alpha !)

When I was looking for my first basenji over 15 years ago I spent a lot of time on your website and really learned a lot from you even though we’ve never met! I’m in NE Ohio and am on my 4th basenji and I hear your name and see it on a dog here and there.

We got him 2 months ago when he was a little over one. Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to go out for a short time and come back, lengthen the time and also try the crate and Kong. He never goes when we are home so maybe it’s his way of saying if you do not want a mess, don’t leave me alone!!

I always vary feeding time a bit. It is a trick I learned after the first show with my horse... He was not a happy camper when one of his classes delayed dinner time. Being less rigid with the time and more rigid with a routine has made the time change a non-issue (though the horses have not had to learn to sit, they do have to wait for me to give the 'eat' signal before they get their grain like my b's have to wait for their 'eat' command).

If you google Alabama Rot UK Maps you can see the spread. There have been four instances within 20 miles of me. The main map site sends you to another veterinary website with a better updated map.

Correspondents tell me it is pretty wide spread across Europe but I haven't heard of it in USA - not even in Alabama !

So it may be with luggage, but pressurized and climate control. It did worry me that it could drop ti 41C, but that's rare.

I agree, and people with real needs are being the ones punished by the others. Friends with long time service dogs support the tightened regs, but some are bitter they have to jump through hoops because of it.

You're also not new to basenjis. That helps.

@Kafka45 , I've used booties on several basenjis over the years. My first used to wear them when we took runs in the winter during very cold snaps.

I love putting them on a dog the first time .. the Lipizzaner effect is great!

I'd put them on her 5-10 min at at time keeping an eye on her (in case she likes to chew on em) with some distraction if needed. She'll get used to them quick enough. You don't even need to do all 4 at once if she really hate em but she'd get accustomed to them more quickly with all 4.

I like the fabric with Denier bases the best, I've seen and used the rubber bootie types and personally, it seemed my dogs didn't care for them as much.

One's I have use a fleece top, Denier base/sole and simple elastic and velcro at top.

Somewhat like link below but simpler ... had them >15 yrs so I don't see any quite the same. Not advocating those on link, just simply saying I myself don't care for the ones that seem to mimic human shoes ... especially if only used for 15 -20 min at a time.

Have you considered feeding raw food (meat and vegetables)? It worked wonders for our B's coat and overall health.
