What about putting cotton balls in his ears before going out to the beach or dog park or whatever? I have heard of this being done before and then all you do is pull them out afterwards and dispose of them? Apparently if your dog is a 'head out the window doing 60' type you are supposed to do this because if you don't your dog can do deaf because of the wind noise.

Helena, yes we are going to keep in touch, i have sent them a link to Sally's site. They couldn't find the paperwork for the dogs but one of the dogs came from a wing commander ? and they remember the name Horsley, another dog came from Liverpool. They belonged to the nbs in the 70's.

Chris, how about a compromise? Create a pleasant but smallish "Fort Knox" enclosure where the dogs can be outside without super close supervision ('tho I'm not a fan of B's being outside at all if their owners aren't home) Then go ahead and fence the rest in an affordable, climb-proof material for those times that you're able to keep a close eye on them. This approach works for some folks, depending on the size of the property and wildlife present, and how committed they are to keeping their dogs safe. Keep in mind, 'tho, the fence isn't just for the dogs–depending on your property, you might want to securely fence a yard so you can enjoy yourselves on summer evenings without a skunk, racoon or bear sneaking up on you :)

Boy, have I been trained! I give Kipawa full body massages! It is sweet to see his eyes lose focus as he drifts off.

Who would pay if the breeder had to pay for a C-section for the dam which is not cheap? This is why BYBs/commercial breeders should not breed. Many think it is so easy with few costs and they will get lots of pups to sell! I talked a few commercial breeders from bidding on Basenjis at the dog auctions-told them about the once a year going into season-pups not being available for sale until after Christmas, possible C-sections, and the not too large litters. I had never heard of this problem in this pup until now. It sounds like a developmental problem in the womb not a genetic one. The health website she linked to was for humans not animals/dogs! An agility dog is always an agility dog, no matter how old! And racers too I guess! None of mine are athletes but Nicky at 14 always amazes people, if you don't see her grey hairs or cataracts, you think she is much younger. Love the 'oldies but goodies'.

Jennifer, I really did not know anything about "African dogs" before Bowpi. This mural at a local pet store basically sums it up for me: [image: 5745509414_1eeaef11ac.jpg] I'm kind of surprised that Ridgebacks don't even place on their mural, given how popular they are around here. What initially piqued my interest about Basenjis was less their place of origin, but their breed characteristics – cleanliness, elegance, personality, etc. But it does stir the imagination to think about where they fit alongside others like the "painted" African wild dog, whom I guess commanded more attention from Jane Gooddall and the like.
