@DolceMomma: Seeing B's on the commercials and in the magazines scares me about what will happen to them as they become more popular. Me too! Basenjis are incredibly photogenic. Many people don't read the details, just see the picture and think "I want one of those!" God help the breed if it becomes "flavour of the month". All it would take would be one celebrity to display a Basenji prominently…..

Mine are naked in the house, but they are older and not inclined to leave, even if a gate is left open. We wear Nick Russell Safety-choke, similar in theory to martingale in that it snugs up when the dog pulls. We walk in harnesses, it is safer for their old necks and spines.

I've had experience twice now via air on Delta, and all worked out fine. The first time, I traveled to the location to pick up my 2 rescues. I checked them at the same time I checked luggage. They flew in the cargo hold, and I'm sure it was a bit stressful for them, but driving long distance in surroundings not familiar would be even more stressful I think. I watched them get loaded and the whole bit. The flight was only a couple of hours and before I knew it, we were home and they were running around in the backyard. So, it was a great experience. The second time, I sent a Basenji to Minnesota using Delta Cargo, and it was a great experience as well. They checked the dog in, and held it in temperature controlled area, then took in a temperature controlled truck to the plane…where it was only open to the elements for a few quick minutes. I don't mind telling you that I was a bit nervous on his one, because I found out after an hour or so that they had to switch the crate to a different plane (as the other flight was really delayed). So, the dog to their destination a little later but still in good shape and the new owners found the dog in great condition, and again, got it home and she was running around the backyard in no time. I honestly cannot remember the costs, but Delta Cargo was reasonable. It all depended on size of crate/dog. Best of luck! I do think air is easier and quicker for the dog, and you'll get to see your B much sooner. I do think any travel without it's owner is stressful, so I don't think you can avoid that, but the idea is to minimize.

@agilebasenji: mmmmm . . . curly tail soup. (that's what I threaten my kidz with. They all take it so seriously - NOT) Okay, upon further reading, I think that they are suggesting putting PAM on the dogs' paws before walking out in cold weather/salty sidewalks. I have heard this advice. Don't know if it works as when the weather is that bad, we're not out very long. Okay, I suppose that makes some sort of sense, but even down here in Florida, they sell booties for dogs - really cute ones actually, and some that are very light and disposable. I would imagine in cold weather areas they are even more readily available and would make more sense than pputting anything on their feet that could then get tracked into the house and all over the floor.

Thank you Suzee. They had fun with the squirrel after they found it. I like watching that Python Hunters show that is on OLN about the invasive species of snakes in FL. It is a good show and it does show us how we have disrupted the ecosystem by introducing non native species to different parts of the world. I have not seen a squirrel in the yard for a couple of weeks now, it's great! Once I get the rest of the acreage fenced in they can go into the back pasture and hunt mice through the grass. We don't have a lot of rabbits out here but in the summer time I will take pics of their new place to run!

I will admit that catching the basenji does get easier. My boyz (now 14 and 15 years) are much, much easier to catch. ;-) Actually Jet the trying has decided he hates being outside, even if the weather is nice. Except yesterday. He wanted to stay outside so he could eat grass and throw up. It's hard to find nice edible grass in January in Colorado.

@tanza: Exactly, I agree with Lisa… the hardest part is to talk them into taking it easy. However, that said, I very, very rarely use any medication for pain on a Spay or Neuter. I would rather they feel a bit of pain to slow themselves down. (After the first night) I think you will find in 3 or 4 days you would not even know that she had a surgery. Thank you Pat…very comforting to know she will bounce back in a few days or so.

@Kipawa: Does this mean that you are thinking of breeding in the future? Hi Fran! "Apollo", as we are possibly going to use as his call name…will be a show dog. Me and Sarah will not be the ones showing him at this time, Therese is going to do it for us. We haven't yet worked out all the details but he will be allowed to continue in Kevin and Therese's breeding program. Basenjis are very special to us and we are excited to be a bigger part of Kevin and Therese's "family". Unfortunately at this point we are still waiting to find out which boy it will be...has to be a good fit all-around. There has been talk of possibly getting one of the "men in black" boys Therese will be getting from Lisa in CA. The waiting is so hard! I hope everyday reveals improvement for Darrel. Give Kipawa a huge B hug from us.

Glad she is doing so well.

First I would suggest that if you don't trust the breeder to explain it to you, you need to perhaps work on a bit better relationship there. Or find a breeder who has the time, knowledge and interest in doing so. The breeder should always be your first line of information. :) Second I would suggest that while I myself prefer the red and whites, it isn't how I could choose a dog for a pet. If the dark remaining is a deal breaker, perhaps someone here can suggest a breeder with pups that would fit. Third, gets pictures. We love pictures. Fourth, BAD BARKLESS! Do you know how hard it is to get coffee off the keyboard and monitor? ROFLMAO.

@MacPack: I'll check it out. My DH Donald takes most of our photos and some sites claim ownership of all photos posted there so he is leery. Sounds easy enough, if I can e-mail photos there, then figure how to get them from there to here, haha! This site actually does that, but since the photos aren't actually physically posted here (uploaded to this site) , but are hot linked, I am not sure how they can be "claimed". That clause gave me pause as well…....and apparently also applies to what is written. It would make for an interesting legal case, for sure, if someone inadvertently posted copywritten material. Of for that matter if the material was posted elsewhere without attribution or with false attribution. BTW, from Photobucket's terms & conditions: "You retain all your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or while using Photobucket. This means that YOU own ALL the Content you post"

I've been debating this myself. I have a sectional that I bought 5-6 years ago, microfiber material. Kananga has already dug through the material where he sleeps (at the corner of the sectional). I had flipped the cushion once to hide the damage, but he did the same thing to the other side. Leather just seems much easier to maintain. No worries of accidents, and I'd imagine the leather will just be more durable (depending on the type).
