The basenji health page on the BCOA site give a very nice general description. http://www.basenji.org/PUBLIC/HealthInfo.htm Since PPM never gets worse and can get better with age, if after the puppy has been examined by a vet opthamologist there is no vision impairment then you won't have to worry about it getting worse.

Is he missing any teeth or is his bite "off." Sometimes these two things can aggravate the temporamandibular joint. TMJ is not something I have heard a lot of in dogs, but I'm sure it can happen much like with humans. You might want to consider softer foods for him at least some of the time… It may give the joint a bit of a rest. In humans it is suggested not to chew a lot of gum or hard foods because it makes the condition worse, so I am assuming the same may help with dogs. Good luck, I hope he feels better.

Yeah, Jazzy's mom… it's okay, I guess I was being a dope about that! Sometimes I get all flustered about an issue and don't quite see the irony in things... no apology needed.

Glory has been with me almost two months - she is a little over 3 months old. I have switched her from a puppy food that was high in beef which she was eating when she came to us to a food that has chicken and vegetables. The soft stool doesn't bother her - there is never a sense of urgency to go - she only has a soft stool about twice maybe three times a day. She has gained almost 9 pounds since she came to us - she was very underweight and very young. Right now she weighs just under 16 pounds. We're doing stool testing every 2 weeks and except for the very first test, they are coming back O.K. I'm concerned that she may not be processing the nutrition from her food or that she will have chemical imbalances because of the loose stools. Am I worrying for nothing?

Luny has done that once or twice (normally he's a once-a-day dog) when the temperature was really cold (below 0) here and he refused to go outside (except to pee next to the door).

Thank you for your advice. Any Idea what causes interdigital cysts? Are they fairly common, and if so… would there be a chance she would get cysts elsewhere?

@tanza: Not to put any pressure on you or the Vet.. but to me… blood work is one of the most important tools.... and I am surprised that at least even with an appointment next week ... that they didn't take blood while he was there.... If it was me... and I am a "freak" about doing blood panels.. I would have insisted on at least that..... Thanks for letting me know. As Booger & Lola are my first "grown up" dogs (my parents took care of sick dogs growing up & we never had many issues until 1 got cancer), I really honestly don't know all the things I should be looking for or asking about. I will definitely call & ask about that. Booger does seem a LOT better today than he did yesterday, which is good. I don't take this as much of a sign of anything, but it at least makes me feel better knowing he isn't so miserable. He's a lot perkier & more playful. He gave us some playful baroos earlier, too, which is a rare treat!

The 14yo JRT that I used to pet sit would get accupuncture for his arthritis in his hip & shoulder. It worked fantastic for him and gave him great relief…and he only would make a noise (he was a growly cranky old man) when they would put the needle in near the crown, otherwise, he would just lie there while they put the rest of the needles in. Kind of amazing.

I know some breeds have raised water/food bowls so the dogs are "level" when they eat. Don't know if this will help here, but its worth a try.

Vet said that he might experience fainting spells. I'm assuming that if blood is unhealthy, it can't do its job properly. Things like carry oxygen, nutrients and toxins to the appropriate organs. I'm hoping the best case is he will go from unconsciouness to death. He got hit by a car about 10 years ago and got his pelvis screwed back together. Other than that he gets around fine. thanx

We decided to take Booger to the vet this evening. The doctor seems to think its just allergies to something in his environment. He recommended antihystamines & possibly antibiotics. He said if those don't improve it, we might want to have a culture taken from his nose. So we got some Benadryl, and hopefully his condition will improve over the next day or two.
