Dry nasal passage… bloody sneezes

    Poor Booger has been sneezing a lot lately. Yesterday I noticed that sometimes he sneezes a tiny bit of blood. During the winter, my nose always gets dry & I often have a similar problem. I'm not very concerned about the blood, I'm more concerned that he's probably not very comfortable.
    Should I buy a humidifier or something? He doesn't seem to be in pain or anything, but I'm sure its not exactly pleasant. What can I do to alleviate the dry conditions or fix his nostrils?

    Are you sure that he didn't get something up his nose? Dogs don't usually sneeze a lot unless there is an irritant causing the sneezing. Here in California, foxtails are the usual culprit.

    Can dogs get sinus infections?

    I add humidity to the house daily this time of year. I use a stove top steamer pot and add a little "liquid scent" just because it smells pretty.

    I tried a humidifier for a short time and gave it away. Too much moisture in the air (hard to regulate, too much moisture stays in the room the humidifier is in), and the thing needed to be cleaned and sanitized all the time or the mold/mildew spores were airbourne and played hell with the allergies.

    The steamer/simmer pot is easy to clean and regulate.

    He's been sneezing since the weather started changing a couple of months ago, and we just thought it was seasonal allergies. We're going to take him to the vet tomorrow.

    All of my dogs came down with an Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) a few months ago. There was a lot, and I mean a lot, of sneezing and a lot of, um, well, there's no nice way to put it - dog snot. We don't know if the Bs picked it up at a show or if the lab picked it up at the kennel but after about ten days of antibiotics they were fine. Definitely not dry sneezes though.

    Were there any other symptoms? His nose has been a little runny (little wet spots are left behind where his face was when he wakes up), and when he sneezes its a typical wet sneeze, but not a lot of snot other than that to speak of.

    They were a little lethargic but I knew it was something when they all three came down with it one at a time. Has he been out in public around other dogs lately? URIs are contagious. They started out with just a few sneezes and then - whoa! mucho sneezing and snorting.

    We decided to take Booger to the vet this evening. The doctor seems to think its just allergies to something in his environment. He recommended antihystamines & possibly antibiotics. He said if those don't improve it, we might want to have a culture taken from his nose. So we got some Benadryl, and hopefully his condition will improve over the next day or two.

    For anyone experiencing similar symptoms, gonna post a recap from today's visit. Vet said that it's very likely to be an allergy, since his symptoms didn't really worsen, other than 2 or 3 breathing difficulty attacks (probably due to extra exposure to the allergen). Chances to be a foreign body stuck in his nasal passage or ear are very slim, because he would've already gotten at least some yellowish/greenish, pus like, nasal discharge and a lot more pawing and overall discomfort. Same goes for kennel cough, but since it has a longer incubation period, he said to keep under supervision for 2-4 more days (should at least get some specific coughing, fever or something related to infections). He said that a blood test would pretty much say nothing in this case, and a lung X-ray is also not needed since he didn't hear anything weird with the stethoscope. He just recommended to stay away as much as possible from grass for now and keep an eye on him. Prescribed Aeurius in case of other breathing attacks. All in all, my boy seems to be getting better. Not much sneazing, other than a few times when taken outside. Nose doesn't seem to be as runy either. And he seems to be getting his energy back, as he wanted to play today. As much as I dislike his zoomies sometimes, I 100% prefer that than not feeling well and laying down, heh.

    @prasadvaze There are wipes which you can use instead of baths, I imagine most of them neutralize odors and have a fresh scent. Perhaps try those? Mine have always had no detectable smell except after I bath them, then they smell “doggy” for a day or so.     @debradownsouth The ASPCA is a horrible organization for all animals. Every time legislation is introduced to Ban Horse Slaughter they get in touch with the Reps and Senators and kill the bill. They started by protecting Carriage Horses in New York City but those Carriage Horses are still there suffering. With Dogs they commit fraud with their TV Commercials. They say they are a no kill shelter but they outsource the killing. I did my own investigation into them at the Headquarters on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. I went every day after work for 2 weeks and said I was interested in a small dog. I told them which dog I was interested in but the day after that the dog was gone. It had not been adopted because they said the little Dog was vicious! It was not. they give the Dogs and Cats 7 Days and then they transfer them to a facility that has one purpose: to Euthanize Dogs and Cats. The oils are so diluted that there is no danger of them being made ill. My Mom is a Nurse and we had one Cat who lived to be 25 years old. She knows what she is doing. ASPCA is not a good source because they lie and defraud their donors. A

    Oakley was on the Iams intestinal sensitivity formula because I tried taste of the wild ( of all kinds) and he was still having stool issues, combined with a puppy bout of giardia…he did well on it but I didn't feel good about the ingredients. From there I tried nature variety and he wasn't a fan. He has been sensative stool wise with many of the high quality foods so now we use Fromms and he is terrific. He loves all the varieties ( I mix two kinds at a time..one of their grain free versions with a grain version in order to get a reduced grain diet; stool issues if none or too much!) His weight is steady and his coat has never looked shinier, smoother of softer. Lastly, he loves the taste and I don't have to coax him to eat. I agree with not free feeding OR feeding from the same bowl. Since yours have issues (whether it's weight or sensitivity) knowing when they ate and controlling how much will allow you to better navigate around the health issues and possibly identify the cause of some as well!

    It's very possible something has started growing that she has a slight allergy to. My Gemma sneezes when we first go into the fields in the morning lately because everything is coming up and it's dewy as well. She also did this during pollen season, but seldom any other time. Of course our A/C is always on because the days are so hot now, and that may be the answer for you. If she had something up her nose, I think she would be "blowing" trying to get it out, but a vet visit would answer that for you.

    I use tea tree oil on everything. Its the "anti Basenji" tool in our house. Alex will tease me all the time. I apply it to anything I don't want the dogs to lick off. Paws, an insect bite I don't want them to lick, a rash, etc. Its also a great antiseptic and helps the healing process too. I just love it!!!!
