No i'm not insane

  • Hi,
new to this forum. can't believe that i just found it. I have 3 basenjis all red and white. My first is Gracie and she will be six in May. as you all know they can be addictive so we got another basenji this time a boy Jimmie 6 months after we got Gracie he is 5 and we all lived a happy and harmonious life. no too much destruction, no escaping no trouble what so ever… they have their 500's every night. what could possible go wrong... enter basenji #3 Jasper a rambunctious male he was 4 months old when we got him from our breeder..... gone was the peace and quiet. i'm not sure the couch saw him coming and quickly surrendered its stuffing...fast forward to today.. the funiture has been replaced sure it has come corners roughed up from Jasper all 3 get along.. and life is good. There is no tiptoeing through life when you own a basenji or 3 for that matter. I live in Northern calif and even though my dogs are not rescues i get together with the BRAT dogs for a monthly get together and let the hounds loose...

  • We welcome you and your gang to the forum. Where in N CA are you?

  • LOL - welcome. Please post pics - we love them here.

Well, you might be insane…I have 3 as well and sometime I think I might be insane too! :D My b pack is made up of Ruby (r/w - 5yrs), Brando (r/w - 5yrs) - 1 month difference between Ruby & Brando, and Aaliyah the juvenile delinquent (brindle/white - 17mos.). Things seemed so calm with only 2 basenjis in the house - b500 only a few times a day - oh the good old days ha, ha. :D No furniture eaters (so far) in my house though - just laptop power adapter eaters . Your Jasper and my Aaliyah sound very similar - not in a good way, lol!

The really insane part is I might want to add a 4th!

  • Welcome to the Forum from the UK. Yes, we are insane here as well!!!

My breeder is Ann Birk out of kansas. and that sounds like fun.. it it in the Pleasanton area? that's not too far… I would like to check out coursing for Jasper it sounds like that may up his alley.. The other two are couch potatos.. Jimmie was recently diagnosed with fanconi's and is responding well to treatment following the Gonto potocol....:o

Sorry to hear about Jimmie with Fanconi, glad to hear that he is doing well on the protocol. You should think about getting the other 2 DNA tested for Fanconi so that you know their status for the future. You can order the cheek swab test at www.offa.org (go to the link that is for DNA tests) and also by entering them on the CPP site, you can become part of the Basenji community tracking genetic concerns in the breed. We have had a DNA test for Fanconi since 2007 and all breeders should be testing before breeding so that we never have to produce another Basenji with Fanconi.

The event is in Livermore and more information can be found at www.norcalbasenjis.org Hope to see you there.

Oh well, you probably needed a new sofa anyway. I also have 3 badsenjis. Digital the brindlewonderkid is now 13, Jet the tri-ing is 12, and Zest the superstar in training is 3 (she's a r/w, the others you should be able to figure out). We also have Pearl-petual Motion, the malinois (malinut).

Welcome to our forum - it's a nice place.

  • Welcome! We have 3 too, and they get along great, all are couch 'taters too at 14, 12 and 10. Looking forward to photos of yours. Glad your boy is doing well on the protocol!

  • Hey 3basenjis! Welcome to the Forum and I am in the Sacramento area as well with 2 b's - one of them is on the Fanconi Protocol too! If you're interested could meet up and have a playdate sometime! Other Sacramentoers (Sacramentoees?) are welcome also!

  • Other Sacramentans. I live in Woodland, so not too far from Sacramento.

I am active in racing and coursing my dogs and if you are interested in getting started let me know and I can let you know what events I will be attending.

  • Sacramentans. There you go.

Hey Ivoss - I work in Woodland!

  • Cool! Where in Sacramento do you live? Natomas?

It's hard to wait but take it from me; enjoy not living your life by the clock while you can..once the puppy comes you will find yourself looking at that clock and setting timers to go out to potty, eating…enjoy peaceful sleep and freedom..because once the puppy comes its a prison sentence for a little while (not to sound like a downer..lol) I was so excited to pick up Oakley that I picked him up a few days short of ten weeks; I wish I prepared a bit more mentally for such a huge event..Oakley was a tough cookie...so glad puppyhood is over! I miss the tiny body and cute little wrinkles but that's what pictures are for!! Lol Congratulations and don't rush it, be excited for it but enjoy the time Between then and now

Hello again after a very long absence!! My 'chewing' boy now leaves his coat alone - his Mum (now spayed) wears his old hand-me-down coat, and he has his onw snazzy camoflage polar fleece jumper that I made. Can't possibly have it off thankyou!! His half-brother Jerry had his first coat on today - also a 'chewer' - we'll see if it is still on in the morning. Jerry's sister Chloe also got one on today after I managed to keep her still enough to pull it over her head!! Jerry is NOT allowed to touch it thank you!! @kiwir: The thing that annoys me is that he always wore a coat as a puppy - he's just turned 12 months now. But boys being boys, in the last few weeks he thought Mum had come back in season (she hadn't!) so in frustration he gradually chewed her coat - from the back forward - left the polar fleece around her shoulders and chest and neck. And the silly girl just let him - looking at him indulgently - "My boy" I tried making them without the polar neck (designed to stop chewing of the front) - or reinforced them with thick cotton tape - and that lasted a little longer. Now he just looks at me with those eyes saying "Hell, I'm freezing Mum!"
