• Our Tri has had dietary issues his whole life. The last couple of months he would get sick then get better, but started to loose weight. Last week he refused to eat for several days and started getting black stools, which is a sign of cancer. We took him to the vet and they did an ultrasound. They said he had advanced cancer & fluids in his chest cavity. He was really weak and the vet said the best thing was to put him down, there was no curing him. It was the hardest thing we ever did. I don't think we will ever get over this. He was 12 years old.

    We lost our best friend.

Rest In Peace Akima, we love you dearly.

  • I am so sorry. I don't know why dogs have such short little lives. Peace.

  • There just aren't any words, so I'll simply say I am sorry. And shed a tear for your pain.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss. Our hearts and thoughts are with you. Rest in peace, Akima.

  • First Basenji's

I'm sorry for what sounds like a sudden and unanticipated loss. There's nothing that would make it easier, though. Peace be with you in your time of mourning.

  • Oakley and I send thoughts of strength your way to deal with such a difficult time. Sorry to hear of your unexpected loss

  • Thanks for all the support. I don't think we will ever get over him. He was not an easy Basenji by any means and I know a lot of you have read the issues we had with him. Still he had a big heart and was really a big love bug. I would still give anything to have him back, issues & all. He really was my best friend. It really just was so unexpected and happened so fast, it's devastating for everyone. He was our first family dog.

We are considering getting a rescue Basenji. We know he wont replace Akima, I can't see us without a male Basenji.
Our Girl Basenji Kept looking for him. She is more a scared fearful shy basenji. However now that Akima is gone she has stepped up and really is being more outgoing and "being there" for us.

  • Thanks again

  • Sorry for your loss, but he is pain free and happy running with all those that crossed the bridge before him

Taking in a rescue basenji would honor Akima's memory, not replace him.

  • I am so sorry -you gave him a loving and caring life. It's so hard to have to say Goodbye.

  • I am sorry for your loss. He had a happy life with you.

  • So sorry for your loss ๐Ÿ˜ž

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. We are never prepared, but when it comes so quickly it is brutally painful. Agree with Agile, a male rescue will honor Akima's memory.

  • So very sorry to hear about Akima. Words can't express our heartfelt concern for you.

  • I am sorry for your loss. Twelve is still so young. ๐Ÿ˜ž I lost Sayblee after over 5 mos of chemo trying to save her but nothing helped.

Pam Hamilton has some basenji mixes up for adoption who are dog friendly and very cute. If you pm me your email I'll have her contact you. And I totally agree, you are not REPLACING Akima, you are honoring the memory.

  • I'm sorry that you lost Akima. ๐Ÿ˜ž

  • So sorry for your loss. They leave a big hole in your heart. ๐Ÿ˜ž

So sorry for your empty space in your family and your heart. It is never an easy experience for the survivors. When you all are ready, another guy sounds like a good idea. They leave us and it hurts, but they have done their job and move on toward the Rainbow Bridge and will be waiting for us! You will always miss them, their souls, the antics, the good, the bad, and the ugly, but will always be beautiful foreverโ€ฆ.
