You'd think I'd have learnt my lesson!!

Basenji Talk

  • Last night Benji slept on our bed as a treat. In the morning when I got up, I put him out in the garden first. (He needs to be separated from the other boys). Once I'd got all the dogs out for pees etc, I had a cup of tea, then I made breakfast for the Bs and let Benji back out into the garden for a run. He was out with the Collie and I shut the back door. I started to make breakfast for myself. I put my weetabix in the bowl and put the bowl and the milk on the table. All other dogs were locked up in crates eating breakfast at this point. I then went to the bedroom to get my glasses. Well, when I returned to the living room via the kitchen, I discovered the backdoor open and the collie standing there. Hmm thinks me.. who opened that door? I continued into the living room. Nothing seemed unusual until I turned to see Benji in his crate. At first I thought 'good boy' for going straight back into his crate, until I noticed he had something large in his mouth. I walked over towards his crate to see what it was. Well to my horror  it was a dry weetabix!!!. I checked the table and my bowl was exactly where I had left it ….. minus one weetabix!

I've had Bs for over 7 years now. You'd think I'd have learnt not to leave food out, even if the backdoor was shut!!

  • Hee hee, he is just keeping you on your toes:D

  • Vicki,i hope you offered Benji milk to go with it, lol.
Years ago when i lived at home my parents had a Pappilon, around christmas time mum left bowls of nuts and chocolates out. Unknown to us for quite a while Bambi had been helping herself to the nuts.

  • I gues he just needed some fiber. Did you ever figure out if they opened the door, or if it just wasn't quite shut all the way?

Too funny. Otis thinks that anything we (the humans) eat, I should eat, so if you leave anything on the table, I mean anything it is free game. yesterday I had a plastic baggie on the table with baby wipes in, he had to have that to eat, wouldn't give up..so I opened it up and let him have one…not so fun anymore, but he wouldn't take no for an answer, he had o see that it wasn't edible, not be told..he did manage to swipe a package of sliced almonds off the counter later that he chewed a hole in so he could get to the almonds...

  • I think Benji opened the door. It's a new back door one which you need to lift the handle to shut properly but I never do that when I'm in. I think he just managed to stretch up and pull the handle down!

Yesterday, Douglas fell asleep on the sofa and when he woke up there were Kleenex all over the floor. Chance, Trouper & nakura had munched their way through the whole box!

You may have noticed I haven't posted any vids or many pics of my dogs especially inside the house. That's because it's embarrasing to see the amount of shredded kleenex, plastic, cardboard etc all over my floor! :o
Everyone else's houses look so clean & tidy. How can that be living with Bs??

That's easy to answer… I clean it all up before hubby sees the mess and freaks out! LOL If he knew half of what Blaze has done, I think the dog and I would be homeless! ...and I certainly would not be getting another B!

  • Back in 1976 my first tri Basenji, Nipper stole my toast right off my plate. Got up to get something real quick and turned around and the toast was snatched in a second. I laughed at the time as she was normally a really good B and never touched or chewed anything.

LOL, don't worry, my house is exactly the same. Especially with two naughty puppies. Everyone knows you can't be too houseproud with dogs around, especially Basenjis.:D

My roommate and I have given up on cleaning the living room because that's "his" area. Cody loves to pull fluff everywhere and doesn't really care for paper, etc, although I do have to make sure he doesn't find his leash or else it will be in pieces in less than 2 minutes. Usually during one of his naps I stuff the fluff back in his pillow, but that's as far as I go. It's a little embarassing when my firends come over, but most of them have dogs (or children) so they understand.

  • My first beastie would go and do something "naughty" just to get me away from the table then he'd go around the other way (you can enter my kitchen from two directions) and grab the sandwich or whatever he had spied on the table. :D

Gossy, my current beastie, will simply prowl around the room while I'm eating and then suddenly spring onto the table or into my lap if there' something she's thinks is good to eat. I know she does this but it is always so sudden there's only a split second or less to notice and grab her first. :D

  • Basenjis are the ultimate thieves!

I take a training class on a Tuesday - and a few weeks ago while i was there John decided to just make a pizza for his dinner, and sat down in front of tv - he was so engrossed in what he was watching that he bearly noticed the pizza getting chewed from the other end by a certain tricolour..

Borzoi can do that too! my Lucy once helped herself to one end of a jumbo hot dog while I was eating the other. She would also beg shamelessly; she once had the end bench at Crufts on a row opposite some trade stands. I hate to think what she ate that day; various dog treats and food, human sandwich fillings, at least one Jaffa cake all of it proffered by willing victims who were flattered by her un-Borzoi-like attention. Of course she was raised by Basenjis.

  • I have alughed so hard over these posts that I'm crying. Mind you its good to know that we're all 'suffering'!

Re doors - we've changed some of the handles to the old fashioned round ones as all mine open the latch pull down type. The trouble is they have yet to learn (apart from Jewel) how to close them! Jewel also if she is really determined can turn the round handles too!!

Cody is actually really good about not begging for food, at least with me. I think it's because my food is almost always really spicy-hot. The first time I gave in, even though I tried to pick them out, he accidentally got a jalapeno along with his chicken and cheese, and he didn't like that at all! Now he just comes over to see what I have, but he doesn't beg or try to take it. My roommate, on the otherhand, will give him little bits of meat here and there. Occasionally he gets brave and will try to take things off of her plate if he can get to it. Recently, she was eating Chinese dumplings while watching TV, she looked down at one point, he was happily munching on them.

My other dog, a German Shepard/Rottweiler mix that lives with my parents now (and they have decided that I can't have him back), will beg for anything and everything. He will sit at your feet and stare at you and drool. If it's on your plate, he wants it, no matter what it is. Meat, seafood, collard and turnip greens, almonds, anything. He has recently discovered that he likes coffee, and so they have to make sure not to leave their cups anywhere he can reach it.

  • I think everyone who decides to have these little furbabies has to make a conscious decison that housekeeping is going to fall by the wayside in some areas. . . for instance it's not real easy to keep carpets nice and clean when they drag their treats and bones all over it! We just vacuum and count on getting in a professional cleaner a couple of times a year. Other than that, our friends just have to understand - we have a Basenji!

@eeeefarm: The digital age has somewhat muddied the waters. Once upon a time you could buy a book or a DVD and when you were finished using it you could pass it on to your friends so that they could enjoy it (you still can!), and that isn't considered stealing. Make a copy for them to view, with the same exact result (they get to see the movie or read the book), and suddenly it is illegal. The law was drafted to prevent people from making numerous copies and selling them for profit, a clear infringement to copyright. For a person to make a copy for a friend to view rather than snail mailing the original seems to be in a "shades of grey" area. I'd be surprised if most on this forum haven't at some point downloaded something for personal use that would infringe copyright if the letter of the law was applied. You make a good point Shirley.. except that even 40 yrs ago you could tape or even xerox music/books to share, but it wasn't legal. The problem is that if a person LOANS you his movie, snail mail, it goes to one person only, and it goes back to the owner… you don't get to keep a copy. If you put on a server, many can copy it. Right now musicians are in terrible financial straits over people pretty much stealing their work instead of buying it. Some music programs (I am blanking on names) pay the artists a bit every time you listen to their music, thanks to advertising. That's great. But if I want to own a song on my own computer or to burn on a disk, call me a patsy-- but yes, I buy it. I believe people who create books, music, art... they have a right to get paid as much as your plumber, mechanic or grocer. I don't sneak into movie theaters either, btw, not even if I could do it and not be caught. Many digital books can be loaned, btw. I have borrowed a few and loaned many of mine through Amazon. You could, of course, just let someone borrow your e-reader or mp3 player, lol, but that's more generous than I want to be. I don't know what the solution will be years from now... I know that cable companies tried to block recording movies and that didn't go over so well. So I do agree there are certainly conflicting and gray areas. But a cavalier approach to stealing, justifying it because the owner is rich, etc... that bothers me. And it bothers me for someone to try to pretend it is legal or for educational etc. If you are going to do something, man up. :) Thanks for the calm voice. :)

You can buy martingales at Petsmart in the collar section near the choke chains.
