Basenji Burps ?

Basenji Talk

  • Cody burps almost after every meal. Usually faces me burps once and then either rubs his head on the couch cushion or motions for me to rub his face. Not sure if he make a noise when he burps, I am hearing impaired so I don't hear most noises. Auoroa almost never burps but is usually much slower at eating her food.

  • First Basenji's

Hehe, yup. It's darn cute. She extends her neck and gets just a little buggy-eyed for a sec, then resumes whatever she was doing before.

  • @Andrew:

It is extremely loud & unladylike, and she often does it right in my face. Several times a day.

Andrew, oh how this made me laugh! :D

Kipawa burps sometimes after a meal, and I swear when he needs to he holds onto it until he is beside Darrel or myself. So, Lysh, sounds like everything is copasetic at your end!

  • bahaha!! oh yay! glad im not going crazy….. i could have sworn she burped at me :P she does it after a satisfying meal. must try to capture this on vid! hehe

  • @agilebasenji:

Yes, that's exactly what it means at my house. Usually right before they wipe their muzzles on the sofa or bedspread.

So funny….Every night after dinner Sonny's does the same thing..walks in the living room, lets out a burb you'd expect from a 300 pound man and rolls around on the carpet wiping his face all over :p

  • Isn't it amazing that Basenjis all over seem so alike? Gbala always jumps up beside me after a meal, looks deep into my eyes .. and burps! The others do burp but not always just for me!!

  • Yes, with this thread I think we have all discovered a basenji trait that is never spoken of or published. Kind of like being a part of a special group, like the Freemasons. It's all hush hush…. shhhhh... just enjoy the burps but be very discreet in who you tell about it. :)

  • Blaze burps, too, after a meal, although he doesn't do it to us. He also often gets the hiccups after he eats, probably because he inhales his food!

  • @smithadam576:

It is difficult to get them through their first 2 years, and many people give them up before they become an adult.

I suppose they don't appreciate the fun that is encountered the first two years.

I'm always looking forward to what my B will do next. :D

  • Shaye burps after she has eaten if she eats more than her usual nibbling, and has no reaction as though it's just part of the meal. Gemma (the mix) only burps occasionally, and hangs her head immediately as if she is thinking "oh my, that wasn't very ladylike."

  • Well this is all so reassuring…I thought my B's burping was unusual but I guess it's quite common!:D

  • I think its cute…Anubis will chow down his breakfast or dinner or even a snack and then come over to me, Burp and then go spazz out with his toys. You can hear his burps too...they are pretty loud. Anubis eats Beneful dog food and gets raw meat/bones a few times a week as well. He particularly loves it if im outside grilling....he usually gets thrown a raw rib or two when hes outside with me. Or a chicken drumstick if Im cooking chicken. He loves it!

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
