    • RE: Life Expectancy??

Thanks to everyone who responded. I had started to freak out a little yesterday when a Basenji site listed age span as 8 to 10 years. My B is 8 years old and has been with us for a little more than 4 years. I hardly remember what life was like before we got her! While she has calmed down some in the last year or so, she certainly doesn't act old.

I also want to give a broader thank you to everyone on this site. What a wonderful source of information and support! 🙂

We rescued our current B from Medfly - just north of LA. Karen at Medfly was wonderful to work with and we love our little girl!

Thank you! I didn't even think about checking OFA. That is very helpful.

    • Resources for researching breeders?

Hi, I'm in San Jose, CA and looking for a basenji pup to join our family. We recently said goodbye to our Zoe who blessed us with 15 wonderful Basenji years.
Do any of you have a good resource for researching breeders? We have found one in Arizona that is taking reservations for January. Also looking for someone who may be closer.
      Any help is appreciated!

    • Life Expectancy??

      How old is your basenji?

I have found varying ages for the average life expectancy of Basenjis - anywhere from 8 to 16 years. While it's not the happiest topic, what experience have you forum readers had?

(Please forgive me if this has been covered somewhere else in the forums. I did a search, but couldn't find anything related.)

      Thanks

    • RE: How did you and your B come together?

I have a sister much younger than I am. Growing up she had always begged for a puppy. Sometime after I had moved out, our parents finally gave in, with one condition…they get a Basenji. My stepdad had a B growing up and that was the only dog he would consider. I know they spent some time researching and explaining to my teenage sister the responsiblity of owning a dog, and specifically a B. I wasn't much of a dog person and I had never heard of Basenjis, but the first time I saw Zoe I was completely smitten.
Within three years, my sister was of driving age and really wasn't holding up her end of the dogcare deal. My parents started talking about giving Zoe away. At the time I was renting a house that didn't allow pets. I told my parents there was no way they were giving that dog away! I quickly found another place to live and Zoe has been with me (and my husband) ever since. I don't even remember life without a basenji...and I never want any other kind of dog.

      LOL!!
I haven't ever witnessed my B popping balloons. But, if I'm blowing bubbles, she loves to jump around trying to "catch" them in her mouth.

    • RE: Newbie

Welcome! I know you'll find this website both informative and entertaining.

I agree with you two. My experience with my B has been relatively undestructive. We got her when she was 3 years old, so she had calmed down some. I spend most days working from home and she just sits around in whatever sunny spot she kind find. She does manage to tear up tissues if she can find one. I don't really fuss about that much since I know it could be much worse. I don't leave her unattended in the house, though.
