We rescued our current B from Medfly - just north of LA. Karen at Medfly was wonderful to work with and we love our little girl!

Thank you! I didn't even think about checking OFA. That is very helpful.

Resources for researching breeders?
Hi, I'm in San Jose, CA and looking for a basenji pup to join our family. We recently said goodbye to our Zoe who blessed us with 15 wonderful Basenji years.
Do any of you have a good resource for researching breeders? We have found one in Arizona that is taking reservations for January. Also looking for someone who may be closer.
Any help is appreciated! -
RE: Life Expectancy??
Thanks to everyone who responded. I had started to freak out a little yesterday when a Basenji site listed age span as 8 to 10 years. My B is 8 years old and has been with us for a little more than 4 years. I hardly remember what life was like before we got her! While she has calmed down some in the last year or so, she certainly doesn't act old.
I also want to give a broader thank you to everyone on this site. What a wonderful source of information and support!

Life Expectancy??
How old is your basenji?
I have found varying ages for the average life expectancy of Basenjis - anywhere from 8 to 16 years. While it's not the happiest topic, what experience have you forum readers had?
(Please forgive me if this has been covered somewhere else in the forums. I did a search, but couldn't find anything related.)
Thanks

RE: How did you and your B come together?
I have a sister much younger than I am. Growing up she had always begged for a puppy. Sometime after I had moved out, our parents finally gave in, with one condition…they get a Basenji. My stepdad had a B growing up and that was the only dog he would consider. I know they spent some time researching and explaining to my teenage sister the responsiblity of owning a dog, and specifically a B. I wasn't much of a dog person and I had never heard of Basenjis, but the first time I saw Zoe I was completely smitten.
Within three years, my sister was of driving age and really wasn't holding up her end of the dogcare deal. My parents started talking about giving Zoe away. At the time I was renting a house that didn't allow pets. I told my parents there was no way they were giving that dog away! I quickly found another place to live and Zoe has been with me (and my husband) ever since. I don't even remember life without a basenji...and I never want any other kind of dog. -

RE: Balloons
LOL!!
I haven't ever witnessed my B popping balloons. But, if I'm blowing bubbles, she loves to jump around trying to "catch" them in her mouth. -
RE: Newbie
Welcome! I know you'll find this website both informative and entertaining.
I agree with you two. My experience with my B has been relatively undestructive. We got her when she was 3 years old, so she had calmed down some. I spend most days working from home and she just sits around in whatever sunny spot she kind find. She does manage to tear up tissues if she can find one. I don't really fuss about that much since I know it could be much worse. I don't leave her unattended in the house, though.

RE: Hi Everyone!
Hey Denise. I just recently joined this forum and I can tell you it's really helpful and wonderfully entertaining. It's nice to share with others who know

RE: "A Tired Basenji Is A Happy Basenji"
I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around.
Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!! -
RE: Our new girl
She is beautiful. The one picture on the bed… Dashy sleeps like a person under the covers with his head on the pillow. We had to add a pillow to the center of the bed since he kept stealing ours. Does anyone elses dog do that? It is just so cute.
Our B spends the night under the covers in the vicinity of my knees. However, in the morning she gets up with my husband, eats breakfast and gets back in bed with me. It's during this time that she sleeps in the bed like a person. It's just too cute for words!

RE: Our new girl
What a looker! My brindle loves those darn sticks, too. She makes the biggest messes chewing them up. And on yard clean up days, she just follows me around jumping up and grabbing them out of my hands.
Thanks for sharing the photos! -
RE: Thrilled to join!
I had a little time and finally got some photos of Zoe up. You'll notice the one by my username. But, you can also go to my Member Gallery to see even more:

RE: Eating Poop
Do you think the S.E.P. (stop eating poop) by Solid Gold would work to prevent my B from eating poop out of my cat's litter box? I guess I would have to add it to the cat's food??

RE: Sensitive Stomachs?
I love the suggestions of Pepto and Pepcid. I would never have thought to give them "people" medicine. For us, sometimes if Zoe's having loose stool, I will fix her a small portion of rice and that helps. Think I'll keep some Pepto on hand, now.

RE: Who gets "groomed" by their "B's"?
Our B mostly only grooms my husband - usually if he's been sweating a lot - just come in from cutting the grass or something like that. Every once in a while she'll lick me - usually if I've given her a nice long massage - it's like she's returning the favor or something.

RE: Sensitive Stomachs?
I don't know why I haven't thought to do that. I know the breeder has moved, but I think I can hunt her down.
Thanks for the advise. -
RE: Sensitive Stomachs?
I'm not sure whether the ingredients were the same or not. That's certainly something to consider if I ever have to substitute what she's used to eating.
We currently feed her Purina ProPlan for Sensitive Skin & Stomachs. She transitioned to it relatively event-free. And, has been doing well with it. It seems to keep her regular, too. -
Sensitive Stomachs?
My B is not only my first basenji, but my first dog. I always thought dogs could eat just about anything. Zoe has proven me wrong.
We don't allow her to eat people food - mostly for begging purposes, but over the years, whenever she gets into something it always makes her sick. Either vomiting or diarrhea or both! She's also very sensitive to changes in her dog food. One time my local pet store was out of her normal wet food (we mix a little in with her dry food), so I bought another brand. She vomited for two days!
Anyone else have issues with this? Is this somewhat normal for basenjis?
