My Buddy left us for a trip along The Rainbow Bridge about 6 weeks ago.. As I write this I still tear up. He alone left so many hearts with a little empty space in them. Uncle and Auntie across the acre from us miss him, as their house with three dogs seems empty without Buddy making himself at home on the dog bed, couch or Uncle's favorite easy chair. Little Luke came over for a visit only to walk over to the layer of bricks that cover his gravesite, I know he was looking for Buddy. They use to pair up and then run back to Luke's to romp around for the afternoon. Buddy's house mates are so clingy to me, the extra bundle of energy they use to play with is gone. I kept his blanket for days before I washed it because it had his 'special scent' on it. (ever notice the unique smell your B's coast has on it, or his/her foot pad scent???) He only was with us for a short two years, but it seemed like he always was there. Even the hubby said so, though he thought three dogs were too much…! I learned so much about B's, and many lessons in patience, respect, and how to laugh at foam or toy stuffing all over the floor! I miss him so! He could not have been saved, he was mortally wounded by an encounter with a coyote. Fences could not have prevented it (I have 10 acres) nor daylight hours. I say this in case you were wondering what happened. This in itself prevents me from adopting another one. Coyotes are in every county in Florida, in every neighborhood, houses or fences. Please watch for them, be wary, even with your little (human) children. He was brave though, he actually go away from them and made it home with his wounds, wanting to be home. He went peacefully. I miss him.

  • Please accept my condolences on the loss of Buddy. Having just recently lost our long-time friend and companion, Maxx, I know something of what you feel. Even now, after over two months, I tear up sometimes when thinking of him. Maybe Buddy and Maxx are playing together at the Rainbow Bridge while they wait for us.

Great pictures…Buddy was a handsome boy.

  • I'm sorry for your tragic loss of Buddy. He certainly was a very good Basenji and handsome too.

  • Very sorry for your loss. Our hearts and thoughts are with you.

  • I am sorry for your loss. It is never long enough. 😞

  • I am very sorry to hear of your loss of Buddy.

  • Love and hugs to you - I am so sorry that your special "Buddy" has passed on. In time, the pain goes away and the memories make you laugh and smile.

I am still mourning the loss of my angel child cat Barney. I have found something that is very helpful for me. www.rainbowsbridge.com is a website where you can "visit" your animal, write to them (I do this alot, and it is very helpful for me) and take part in a Monday night candlelight ceremony for Buddy. It truly is a great website to help ease some pain. I am pretty sure someone on here posted the website address for me to check out. I hope you take a quick look at it to see if it is something that might feel right for you.

My sincerest condolences - may Buddy now run happy, healthy and freely.

Thanks so much everyone who responded with heartfelt emotion. I am sure he is playing with all the others willing and able(to keep up with B playing! I just love those 180's they do!!!!) on the other side. I know he will be there to meet me, but on this side for the time being, we miss him so!

  • I'm so sorry to hear about Buddy… hugs and roos to you...

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

For anyone who has pets and/or kids and lives in an area with Coyotes, for your fenced yards please consider Coyote Rollers, http://www.coyoteroller.com/coyote_roller or some other system to create a safe space. Coyotes are getting bolder and there are more reports of attacks even in "developed" areas.

  • We are so sorry to hear of your loss. He is healthy and running free. Along with coyotes, there are foxes who will go after a basenji also, and while they are very young and small, hawks will take them as well. Nothing could have prevented the tragedy you went through, and we all need to be aware that our little furbabies, tough as they are, are no match for nature.

Wow, I just viewed the coyote roller, thanks Ivoss, that is good info! Thanks to all who have extended your condolences. And mine go out to any and all who have had their 'furbaby' travel the Rainbow Bridge. We all do miss them, this I know….:( Buddy's Pal
