There are products that when pointed at a dog give off a sound which firghtens them off! One I know of is called a 'Dazer' an electronic device which gives an ultrasonic sound that dogs can hear. I haven't seen them advertised for some time, I must admit! I had to use one years ago when a neighbour used to 'set' her dogs (Deerhounds) at mine when we walked past - it was very effective and possibly a bit cruel for the hearing but it was either them or mine.

Hah! Basenji500 - I love it! Paco's been doing it ever since we got him, I just didn't know it had a name. :P Our apartment is built like a train, just one long line of rooms, so he loves to fly up and down, jumping off furniture the whole way. We ran a cable between two trees in our long driveway, and use a d-link to attach an extendable leash to it so that we can play fetch outside whenever he gets a little to antsy.

sinbaje, this is why I appealed to the forum. I knew there'd be several smarter and/or more knowledgable people able to help me. The whole genetics thing is still way over my head, so I hadn't thought that Lola's mom COULDN'T be behind Booger (although yodeldogs may have explained this to me a dozen times and it didn't sink in yet)… Lola's mom was brindle I think. I know I was shown a picture of a brindle that was one of her parents anyway. The breeder's name is Carrie from what I remember. Her son's name is Destin Brown, and that's what her dogs are currently registered under (or Booger's & Lola's litters were anyway). She lived in Calhoun, GA (for all I know she's still there, but it seems she sold all of her basenjis after I explained Fanconi to her), and I know her sister helped her raise litters at her own house as well, so her sister might be named Tammy.

@AJs: It all seems very interesting to me…until I got to the ridiculous "carbon offset" nonsense. Just another tax. That's all it is. I hope the trip is successful. +1…I agree re: the purchase of carbon offsets.

Jetta does this. I have a BC who does it too. I call it their "Comfy noise." Mostly cause it makes me feel comfy too. :D

Abbey was almost banned from my son's house after she killed the cat's feather on a stick thingy. We don't have our own cat although she'd like to have one of her own. She loves cats!

We have a friend who keeps dogs in her home, she has kept several basenjis. It isn't free, but not expensive either. If you still have my home e-mail, and are interested, e-mail me and I'll give you her name/e-mail. Or did you ever use Cyndi when you were here?

Buddy barooos really loud at people in the dog park, running up to them sometimes with a tennis ball in his mouth that he stole from another dog. He's the dog park entertainer. He'll also barooo at people that we pass on walks which sometimes startles them. These 2 little girls playing their front yard got baroo'd at and they said "what's that"?

Not only is Zelda already showing great skill in toilet paper theft – she has enlisted Sagan the cat in her mad schemes. We put the toilet paper up high, and Sagan knocks it down for Zelda to grab and shred. Good thing they are so cute. Little beasts.

Poor mail man!! I think Maya has watched Riley do it as i occassionally used try to get him to collect the mail if it falls on the floor and bring to me. Most of the time he couldnt work out what i was asking! But sometimes he did. I've not done it for months but maybe she saw that and she was copying?

@Andrew: As to those who say the puppies should be taken to their new homes to be socialized in that environment from early on, I disagree. Callie didn't come home with me until she was 15 months old. Until that time she lived at the breeders, awaiting her forever home. She is the most well-socialized, out-going basenji, and she has never met a stranger. A man at the dog park recently told me he now wants a basenji because she jumped up on the bench next to him for petting & he is convinced all basenjis must be this way (despite Lola giving him the cold shoulder at the same time haha). I have had one rescue dog (rough collie), and one dog on breeding terms (cavalier) - both came to me at the age of 14 months old. The collie I had lived on a farm, either chained outside the house or in crate inside the hall, never been innside the house or sosialized. He was a very streetsmart dog, and had a lovley temperament. He was really great - a dog against all ods! However - it took me 6 months to rehabilitate him into being just a dog. He could not be taken on long walks in the start, his body wasn't up to it, and his head could not handle all the impressions. He was under weight, had never been loos in the house, didn't dare to do his "thing" outside of my garden, he was terrified of trains, cars, everything that moved. I gave him 3 months to prove to me that he could do better - and within 6 months he was "perfect". Something he never could have been if his genes wasn't on his side. Too bad I lost him only 4 years old due to autoimmune illness. :( So of course - some dogs can handle everything - absolutly. See the same thing with a houndmix (10 months old) I got from rescue 1,5 years ago and gave to my brother - he had lived with a single mom with 3chlidren under 5 years and was sky high with stress - but he is genlte and kind as the day is long. I would liked to keep him for my self, but I was 14 days from getting Kahlo and could not work with him, and a new puppy at the same time. So I thought my brother som stress mastering training - and Truls is now doing greate! (So is my brother - who has no dog training educationg or experiense befor he got Truls. I'm just SO proud of them both.) My cavalier, a female I got straight from the breeder at 14 months old, she was too active to just be "one of 10 dogs" and needed something more in her life to be happy, so she came to me. She had never been trained in anything exept from show, and only knew that her name was Rikke. However, she had been with the breeder everywhere and was perfeckt sozialsed. And she was the cutest dog you can imagine - even when she got sick (Syringomyelia) and was in constant pain, she never got grumpy - ever! I could do whatever I wanted with her, and she would follow me everywhere. If any breeder could give me a dog like that again, I would love to let them keep the pup after 8 weeks. But, some of her other dogs, who have had the same sozialising and "childhood" as my Rikke, was shy and nervous - why? Because not every dog is the same. Because every dog is uniq I want to do the sosializing between 8 and 12 weeks. I need a dog that I can take with me every where - on busses, trains, at my work, on plains when I need to visit my family on the other side of the contry. So I know what I need my dogs to handle - and no - I dont think that an avrage breeder (in norway) has the chance to give 4 or more puppies everything they need in sozialising, alone, in those 4 weeks. I don't know about breeders in the UK or US, in norway breeders ofthen have a regulare job, and just breeds a litter or two a year and combines hollidays with the puppies arival so that they can stay home as much as possible with the pups to give them what they need. And no, I don't think puppies learns to share if they live togheter more than 8 weeks, if allowed they learn that they must protect what they've got, or else some one will steal it. You snooze you loose. I got my brussels griffon at 12 weeks, and the breeder had done a wonderfull job with her - the only thing "wrong" was seperation problems, though I don't know if that came of the age or illness (she also had syringomyelia and had to be put to sleep only 1 year old. :( ).

@Maya: Im pretty sure Maya would eat a ferret (or anything furry!) too. I have two pet hedgehogs and im sure she would eat those if they weren't so prickly… Your hedgehogs are beautiful. I would like to get one, but I have to settle down in a state that will allow me to have one. I'm not ready to settle down yet. :D

@Lenora: Mine digs halfway to China trying to make the perfect nest. Takes at least 10 minutes to get it right. Sometimes she sends the sofa pillows flying across the room! :D:D:D AJ tries to dig up every area that's his to sleep in. Lately, his favorite place to dig is in front of the passenger seat where I have it built up for him. I keep my computer under there, so I have to stop him before he gets that far. They just opened a new park built on a retired landfill that has not one but TWO areas for dog parks, so when one gets run down, they'll open the other and close the first to allow grass to regrow, etc. She-Ra loves it, too, because unlike the other parks this one is wide open and has TONS of running room. Dream come true for us, but it'll still get hot in the summertime, I'm sure.
