Help me find Lola's mom

Basenji Talk
  • Lola came from a backyard breeder who, although she is a nice woman who clearly loves animals, is not the "lifelong commitment to the buyer & puppy" kind of breeder. Once I told her about Fanconi & told her that, based on our first basenji (Booger's) pedigree on zande & Robyn Dubbert's knowledge of a few of the dogs in his pedigree, one or more of her dogs were likely affected and/or carriers, she quickly sold all of her breeding stock & no longer returns my calls.
Initially, she told us she registered Lola's litter CKC because it was cheaper than AKC. Once I realized I needed AKC registration for agility & coursing, I looked into getting Lola's AKC registration, because, we presumed, her parents were both AKC & we could just pay a fee to get her AKC, too. Turns out, Lola's dam is CKC, too.
So we got Lola's ILP, which was fine. However, I would really like to find out who Lola's mom is. I suspect she is dually registered AKC & CKC, but perhaps the breeder got into trouble with AKC & decided to start registering litters with CKC to avoid issues. I only care because 1) I would like the most complete info I can possibly get my hands on for my own benefit, and 2) prior to getting the Fanconi tests for Booger & Lola, when I was researching the pedigrees to determine the likelihood of them having Fanconi, there were almost no test results in their pedigree. I would like to have the most accurate info on zande for my dogs in case somebody else like me gets educated AFTER getting a BYB dog, and wants to see health results of relatives.
I did test Booger & Lola both (carrier & clear respectively), so that's not the issue. I just want to know to satisfy my curiosity, and I was thinking some of the old hats & breeders on the forum might be able to help me out.
Here are the clues: Lola's dam was called "Star." I have no idea about a registered name or #, and the CKC, unfortunately, doesn't have any kind of way to search their database for dogs.
Lola is a cousin to Booger. Her sire is Booger's dam's littermate. They are both on the zande pedigree site. If you do a slow search with "Griffin" you will find Lola (Griffin's Lola Rennt) & Booger (Griffin's Pick of the Litter). I suspect Lola's dam is one of the bitches somewhere behind Booger, or closely related to him. The breeder had about 7 basenjis on site at the time.

… And to those currently seeking puppies, this is why you choose a reputable breeder. You can call them anytime night or day & ask these annoying questions and they not only know the answers, but they're more than happy to share them with you.

  • Were you given Lola's CKC papers?

  • According to CKC rules, if she represented the puppies as CKC registerable, she should have given you pre-printed registration forms with the sire and dam names.

"4. When representing a puppy as eligible for CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB registration, the owner/breeder must provide the new owner with a current, completed pre-printed Puppy Registration Application, which includes the parents' names and CKC registration numbers. If the breeder does not own the sire, and the sire is registered with another kennel club, which has been approved by CKC, then the breeder must provide a copy of the sire's registration papers from the other kennel club."

So maybe if you contact CKC with the information that you have they may be able to provide you with her dam's name.

  • I have virtually no information…. I lost the "CKC papers". All I know is the "breeders" name (she actually registered it under her 11 year old son's name, "because I want him to have some responsibility"... another reason I think she was in trouble with AKC... but that's another story).

I guess I could try to contact them with the breeders name; their website just seems designed to make it difficult to actually talk to anybody or get any information....

  • Here is the contact info:

Email for Applications & Registration Questions:
    registration@ckcusa.com

I would just tell them you lost your registration form but still want to register you dog, is there any way you could recieve a duplicate.

  • Thanks. Hopefully they'll have something. I don't know how many breeds have something like the zande pedigree site, but having all of Callie's pedigree going back to unknown African dogs makes me want Lola's info that much more. Her pedigree is so sad… only half!

  • I contacted CKC, but they won't release information about another person's dog to me, since I never registered Lola under my name.

  • That is too bad. Unless someone has a littermate it will probably be impossible to find Lola's dam unless the breeder decided to cooperate.

  • @Andrew:

Lola is a cousin to Booger. Her sire is Booger's dam's littermate. They are both on the zande pedigree site. Lola's dam can not be in a pedigree directly behind Booger for the sheer fact that Lola is a brindle and white and there are no brindles in his direct lineage. You must have either a brindle dam or a trindle dam - no other colors will get you brindle. That said - where I might be looking is Bongo's half sister out of his sire:

Ginger Carmel Fudge Supreme {Brindle & White F} HP078002/05 USA 28 Oct 2003 or her dam - Kamau Nkosazana Zena who is also brindle and white. Those are the only "close relatives" of Booger's who carry the brindle patterning so if you truly think Lola's dam is related to Booger -then these two might be good starts.

Btw - is Lola's breeder named Tammy?

  • sinbaje, this is why I appealed to the forum. I knew there'd be several smarter and/or more knowledgable people able to help me. The whole genetics thing is still way over my head, so I hadn't thought that Lola's mom COULDN'T be behind Booger (although yodeldogs may have explained this to me a dozen times and it didn't sink in yet)… Lola's mom was brindle I think. I know I was shown a picture of a brindle that was one of her parents anyway.
The breeder's name is Carrie from what I remember. Her son's name is Destin Brown, and that's what her dogs are currently registered under (or Booger's & Lola's litters were anyway).
She lived in Calhoun, GA (for all I know she's still there, but it seems she sold all of her basenjis after I explained Fanconi to her), and I know her sister helped her raise litters at her own house as well, so her sister might be named Tammy.

I'm afraid If I do decide to get another I won't have a chance to introduce them beforehand as it Will probably be a puppy I bring from the US.. I doubt there will be a problem since she will be a young puppy…

If you find that you have excessive collars/leashes, you may want to call your local shelter and see if they would like to have them. So many shelters run on such a shoestring budget, it might be something they'd be able to use but not afford…. Just a thought

I bought that book/CD and it's some pretty nice music. Can't say if it works or not because I leave as soon as I turn it on.

I think I saw Sophie on a b video website and I was so glad that someone else's B made that noise I showed it to my husband and daughter. Thanks for posting that video because as a new B owner we thought we had some kind of devel dog!!! She does it the most to our oldest dog Josie. There are nights she even does it from under our covers in bed when she hears Josie moving out in the living room. Too Funny!!!!
