@senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@dogo-0 said in 8 month old basenji pup with hair loss on the ear tips: when I scratch the tip of her ears, it looks like dirt is coming off If you live in a particularly cold climate, the edges of your pups ears may have a touch of frostbite. That would explain the dark skin cells that are sloughing off when you scratch or rub at her ear tips. Try to protect her ears in the cold. Be gentle when you rub the ends. Depending on the severity, consult your Veterinarian, antibiotics may be needed.

@jengosmonkey LOL this is a really important convo to be having! I'm honored that it takes place on my thread :grinning_squinting_face: and yes, I absolutely agree with the points y'all are making. People do need to know where their pups are coming from and whether they were responsibly bred. To think of it coldly, I wouldn't buy a house without looking into its history and possible problems, or I might face ridiculous stress, expense, and emotional trauma from subsequent issues that come up later. As a consumer, one should do their homework not only on the breed but on the breeder. A breeder who produces puppies carelessly is basically a horrible human being in my book. It was a huge, thoroughly thought out moral decision for me not to adopt but to buy a purebred puppy, as I've worked with rescues before. I took this step with the possible goal of being a custodian. If a breeder is irresponsible in all the aforementioned ways, not only are they producing dogs with a higher possibility of suffering, muddying this ancient breed, and swindling people, they are needlessly taking potential homes away from dogs that need one AND frequently causing dogs to be abandoned! If there weren't any PMs or BYBs, imagine how many people would get schooled by rescue folk and responsible breeders into taking dog-parenting seriously before they ever took one home! Sorry for the rant; I COMPLETELY understand the internal screaming that happens within some of you when you find out a pup is from a mill or crap breeder. If people like you and I keep yelling about it, we will change a few minds, which make all the difference to a few dogs which is better than no dogs :)

@tanza I'm definitely attending the next show as a recon trip. Not sure how the work here but if they're similarly easy to enter as the ones in the US, I do want to show Roux! LOL that's a hilarious saying; I absolutely appreciate a smart lady over cluelessness haha :face_with_tongue:

There should be space for another half Basenji inside the coat. It should be pliable and you should be able to feel its space between your finger and thumb if you pinch it (lightly, of course !) I measure out the kibble in the morning for the days' ration and the only treats they get are taken from that ration. They think they are getting a treat, but actually it is coming from their daily amount so no extra calories at all !

So sorry for the loss of your family member and also that you had the extra stress of finding an alternative vet. The photos are a lovely tribute and my favourite is the one of her in the swim suit too!

@zande - I have place pups at 9wks, but typically to prior Basenji owners, they know the "ropes"... also I do eyes at 9wks, so 10 works better for me in placing pups and yes...(LOL) mine are raised in the home, no kennel.... and the breeders that I know that use kennel runs, still have their pups in the house for house time and "education".....

@emilia May we know just why you have decided to spay her now ? Unless spaying her is going to substantially improve her quality of life, I would advise against it.

@jengosmonkey au contraire ! I was being facetious or even sarcastic. Visitors have to be basenjiphiles - which you undoubtedly are. You meet the requirement.

@senjisilly said in Basenji in Kern County, California: @tanza Doubt that he is a purebred. Hope the links to his other photos help you figure him out. I had a nice long chat with a woman at the shelter who thought he likely escaped his adoptive home and that the owners might not want him back. So far none of his adoptive homes were Basenji experienced. The tail. Have to agree. Still, could have a nice Basenji attitude. :oncoming_fist::beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@lustopher - Well, when you see him sniffing around the house, pick him up and take him out... and tell him to go potty... you might want to try if it is really that cold and the ground is cold, get a bale of straw and put that on the ground.... might encourage him to pee there... same with pooping, when he starts to run around take him out to the straw area... might help..

@jeimygirl I have added him to the database and he will appear as soon as I finish playing catch-up with today's incoming litters. So you will be able to see his ancestors very soon ! It is very easy to add his registration number and change his name at need. Email me photos as he matures and get photos of Mom and Dad too if you can - they really bring the pedigrees to life.

@jengosmonkey LOL.... that is what is happening... and people fall for it... don't do it... too many scam sites... and the pups you are seeing are pup's pictures that are stolen from other sites... these are not real... the posts that I have made and insisted that I would not be interested unless they supplied sire/dam names and the conversation has gone "dark"... and they have not and I am sure will not supply the information I have requested... DO NOT send money, do NOT believe their information.. these are scams... period

@kembe - Very True Kembe, here is a link on looking for a responsible breeder. https://bconc.org/finding-breeders-red-flags There are many scammers out there, don't fall for one.. or a person that is not a responsible breeder.

@sanjibasenji Thanks for the article on Dog Genome Project - I found it very interesting. I was trying to figure out the interactive Genome wheel. It has the basenji closely related to the Azawakh and rat terrier but I’m still trying to figure out the first wheel which has the basenji listed w/ black/grey starting point. As far as the PBS Dog Tales video - it’s very interesting - it’s season 47 episode 2 - I highly recommend you watch the whole thing (54 minutes).

@lindenbaum I've long forgotten about this thread. If I am remembering correctly, I left it up so that people could read the flags that it may be a puppy mill and be able to make their own decision regarding that. I am deliberately wording that as "... may be... " because I do not have any personal interaction with "HH" and therefore cannot speak to it. (please note that I removed your "HH available breeds" list, no offense)
