I'm sure this has already been forwarded to basenjirescue.org but I sent it again just in case as well as posted this on their Facebook page. Hopefully someone can help this guy out. I can help with transport if needed. 🙂
Basenji in Kern County, California
-
This was sent to Karen at Medfly, who has retired from rescue. She sent it to me yesterday and I told her I'd post it here. The dog in question needs a home with a person/couple/family that has previous Basenji experience. He's young, very energetic and destructive. With the right kind of training and encouragement, all of those are manageable. But it's going to take time and commitment. PM me for Skye's phone and/or email.
Good morning, my name is Skye and I work for kern county animal services. I was reaching out to you to see if you could help us out with a Basenji we currently have in our shelter, that’s been here since August of 2021. He was placed with a foster first, then ended up in our sick kennel, once he was finally adoptable he was adopted by a veteran. He was sadly returned a few days ago, according to the adopter he destroyed their home.
Since he has been here he has gone by Benji the Basenji, he is 1yrs 6mths of age, male, neutered and microchipped. We have had him in a play group with other male and female dogs and he did amazing, got along with everyone. He is a staff favorite here at the shelter, we just don’t want this awesome dogs life to consist of a cycle of shelter and temporary homes. He is a great, sweet, smart dog he just needs a little work.
If you would be interested in meeting Benji or even helping us find a home for Benji it would be greatly appreciated. I will attach some pictures of Benji the Basenji.

@jengosmonkey Well done for helping - and good luck with finding a home.
Poor little man is painfully thin and looks very lost. He will recover with love and attention in a good, experienced Basenji home. Destructive tendencies can be cured with patience and seeing him blossom and recover will be a wonderful reward.

I called the Kern County Animal Shelter (California). Benji weighs about 30 lbs. He is currently on a stray hold while they wait to hear back from the family registered to his chip, who were his last adoptive family. Benji will be available for adoption after February 22. His shelter ID is A1147473. Here is his shelter link https://petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=KERN.A1147473
Benji has adorable photos on the shelter's Facebook page. Just do a search for Benji and his posts will pop up. https://www.facebook.com/KernCountyAnimalServices/ -
@senjisilly - Can I post this on FB? Thanks

@tanza - Also wondering if this is a purebred? Hard to tell from the pictures.... but regardless is there is a home out there that would want a nice pup.... that has some issues and time to work with him... that would be wonderful

Feel free to post that information. I just posted that and more links on the Facebook Basenjis for Adoption group, it's just not shareable from a private group. Here are the various links I used:

Doubt that he is a purebred. Hope the links to his other photos help you figure him out. I had a nice long chat with a woman at the shelter who thought he likely escaped his adoptive home and that the owners might not want him back. So far none of his adoptive homes were Basenji experienced. -
