It has been a looooong time since I posted. Sherri and I were owners of Shaun and Mbali in Seattle. Shaun was a champion around 2010 or so in Washington state.

Shaun just turned 16 and is doing great. Sadly we lost Mbali to cancer last fall, shortly before her 15th birthday.

We spent a few months recovering from the loss before mentioning it to Shaun’s breeder. She offered us a 4-year-old female that she was not going to breed. The main reason is that little Karma is Shaun’s daughter! All of this was a total surprise and happened very quickly. Karma is slowly settling in to her new life as a pampered house pet.

We have had a couple of scares with the clasp on Karma’s leash failing so we are researching the best option for a Basenji proof leash/collar/clasp system. Will start a separate thread on that.

Here is a very recent photo of Karma and Shaun at Doe Bay on Orcas Island (Washington state)…

Imagine sleeping on bed springs alone.

I can get new fitted sheets and high-density egg crate foam and solve the problem.

Both bamboo and Kevlar sheets seem to be resistant to Basenji claws.

Any opinions?

Also the sides of her torso are starting to discolor and the hair is thinning there as well. we have been to the vets and all her test are coming back negative, or normal. Yesterday we were at vet-dermatologist and she says it's probably alopecia X, even though basenjis are not a typical breed to get it. She did draw blood from her again to test for the sex-hormones balance, but that was rather on my insistence... The skin is otherwise completely healthy - no redness, soreness or itching.
Did anyone else ever had this problem with their basenji and how did you deal with it - should i consider dressing her in thin layers on hot days to prevent sunburn?
Any advice would be welcome!

thank you

It makes me sick. I'm looking for any article that I can post that addresses the problems with shocking a Basenji - or any dog - in the name of training. Horrifically she puts this device in the hands of pet owners. I was a volunteer at the Humane Society where we put clickers in the hands of owners and I got to see first hand BAD timing. Badly timed rewards don't damage the dog (though aren't great for communication either). Badly timed shocks is just torture. Any articles that you know that I could pass along?
