Wow! I feel so lucky. My basenji has been raised with a lab, and she rarely acts like water is going to kill her. She is sometimes hesitant to go into the wet grass or rainy yard, but I always take her on a leash, so we just keep walking until she pees.
In the winter, I clip her to a tie-out rope (supervised), she RUNS into the yard (wearing a sweater, of course), does her business, and RUNS back to the door and gives the fastest sit ever (because she MUST sit before going in or out) - before being let back in. It is quite comical, like an old silent movie running too fast.
Mine also prefers to poop in the farthest reaches of the property, which is nice since we don't have to walk in anything near the house.

May want to try a hot oil treatment like VO5. I've heard that helps as well. I'm going to try it on Shadow in a week or so-I like to wait until he gets good and dirty!

hahaha. Cute photo. I had to put storage boxes under my bed because Tyler and Zoey could actually fit all the way under and would crawl around under there, and I was worried about them getting stuck–especially Tyler since he's bigger/taller than Zoey.

I think that alone makes me bonded to my dog, it's like a person is inside trying to tell me things. Those soulful, sorry and loving expression, peering, making eye contact.

I don't think I could have watched it. I was crushed as it was. I enjoy the animals around our yard and if I could catch the loose cat I would remove it. As much as I realize it is their instict, I still would freak out

My wife had the same reaction and was really upset by it, she even resented the dog. We tried to catch them but you know you just can't catch a basenji, yet alone one after a bunch of rabbits. As much as I dislike rabbit & other vermin in my yard, I don't want to kill them personally or by our dogs. If a owl comes by during the night thats OK, it's natures way. You can't yell or be mad at a dog doing what it was intended to (my wife). People love to humanize their pets, but really they are animals and preditors.

He was old tired and slow but chasing the bunny invigorated him - I swear he smiled for a week.

Our dog is a timmid scaredy Basenji and she was he same way after that. I did wonders for her ego, she was so proud. I was happy for her.

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!

Raw soup bones from the grocery store. I have the "butcher" cut them into 1 1/2 inch lengths so they are too large to crack open and small enough for the dog to get all the marrow out. After they have been licked and chewed up and are smelling "funky", I boil them which sterilizes them. They can then be kept "forever".

Mine also lone the hard Nylabones, preferably the dinosaur shaped ones. The poor things get decapitated rather quickly though. :p

Too funny! These two things, soup bones and dino bones, are the only things that my two B's LOVE! I would also add the Galileo bone made by Nylabones is super sturdy too. 🙂

I think it should. Cairo seems to have adjusted with his teeth. I have noticed in the last day or so that when he is playing with Caesar and biting that Caesar is screaming less and participating. I think Cairo is putting the chewing to other uses now that he is beginning to learn to not bite so hard.

Cairo was eating the towels at the bottom of his kennel so I switched to a weird material cusion for the kennel from Petsmart (shiny gray crate cusion) and he hasnt unstuffed it yet.

Yes he is an attentionaddict. If I'm trying to exercise he either scratches my head, pulls my hair or trys to lay right on my mat and gets in my way. When my daughter tries doing her homework on the sofa, he'll pull on her books, bite the pages, corners, or paws at them to knock them down.

Very nice work Basenjibratz! They look totally comfortable! And I agree that once the basenjis are used to other dogs, and have a chance to acclimate, often things go quite well. It is that initial interaction that often goes so well! You have done some great work.

Basenji seem to be the masters of the non-verbal put down. And I also agree with Basenji Boy's comment, reminds of that bumper sticker: the more I know of people, the better I like my dog.

What is the correct plural of Basenji? 'Basenjis' or 'Basenji'? A Yodel of Besenjis?

That cant be the same ages for basenjis....Maggii would be 112 years old.

Let's try 5-6years for every human year? That would make Maggii 85-102yrs old?

Ours actually stopped within the last two years and she's 5, so it did take a while!
