Thanks Voodoo for the important reminder on the clothes! Not alot of people know that! 🙂 What do you/anyone recommend one wears to a dog show to show in?

Almost all of our shows here are at least 3 hours away, usually more. So we wind up staying over many times. It's nice to have a table to stand them on for a wipe down and maybe a nail touch up or stray tail hair trim. Sometimes we just stand them on top of the crate or in the back of the SUV, but since our Basenjis are definitely not like Poodles who will stand, sit or lie down on the table for hours without even a grooming noose, oblivious to passers by, a table helps. And so many shows now are clusters of 3 or 4 days…

No, the black hairs throughout the body is because all of our red and white basenjis are genetically sables. Most will lose all of their black hairs except a few on the backs of their ears. Or at least all mine still have black hairs on the backs of their ears.

Nemo, Thanks for the advice. I have both 120 and 60 grit. Also thanks for the tip on the nail becoming leathery right before the quick. My girl's nails are really long and wicked curved. I don't know if that's because when I got her as a rescue she had spent all of her life in a wire kennel. She has what I call pigedon toes. They splay out whenever she standing on them. Anyway they are difficult to cut. I am going to have to work a little every day or two to get the short enough.

I just saw this post and I think it?s great for people that are saying "ooo I am going to breed some puppies!! because I like to have puppies around me"

We hear this too often, people wanting to breed just for fun one time, or because they want 1 puppie of their own dogs, or because there is somebody that wants a puppie because they like their bitch.
Those people only see some sweet little puppies in their mind and nothing more.
I always feel mad, we are busy many years to get involved in the breeding world, being busy with health, only agree with matching combinations (when our boys are asked as stud) etc etc and then someone woke up one day thinking about having a litter and whoops "they are going to breed"
This happened with my niece, she has a very small cat and she told us she was going to breed her. I asked her why?, she told me well, I just like to and we keep one kitten for ourselfe.
I told her, that there are many, many cats in the pound, and too many people just starting breeding their cats and her mom listened to me and was trying to talk her out of it. But no, she is a grown women and after a few weeks there were so many kittens..
Afterwards, she was feeling so sorry to breed her cat…

Pat, I do think that is the plan. They had 3 puppies at the show. I am hopeful they will be able to be an asset to the basenji group.
This is such an exciting time for all of us who love these wonderful dogs!

As noted, in many other posts, check out the breeder and do not just go to one, visit breeders (responsible breeders) even if they don't have a puppy for your at that time… you will learn hopefully what is a responsible breeder is and how puppies should be raised and what to look for...

I can also say, that I suppect that she also is using a stud that she purchased and came from a Fox Terrier/Basenji cross in New Mexico area.... just judging by the pictures of the pups on her website last year.

Sweet trick! The only trick I can add is that we sometimes rub a dryer sheet on my furbabies backs so that we won't static shock them in the wintertime.

I use Martha Stewart's hypoallergenic Lanolin Puppy Shampoo. It kinda has an herbal smell, but it's gentle and leave his coat so shiny! You could also use a brightening shampoo if you have a black and white, the shampoos are usually dark blue, the darker the color , the better shine.

I'm a professional dog groomer, and though my basenji's tail isn't bushy I can give you 2 different options. 1. Go to a petsmart and get a pair of Martha Stewart Thinning Shears, essentially you will just scissor repeatedly in the same spot until all the hair is uniformly trimmed, (You can use a pair of small straight or curved shears, but it would be blunt and to unnatural looking). Or 2. go to a reputable groomer, get your baby a lovely bath, and ask her to do the trimming, if the groomer wants to shave it, tell her to do it with a "3 blade" or "5/8ths blade". that would leave the hair longer and not shaved looking.
