@KiroGurl: how much would a red boy cost from most breeders? whATS THE AVERAGE? In the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, I'd say a safe estimate is around $1000 - $1200 for a puppy from a responsible, reputable breeder. Personally, I haven't found there to be a lot of variables with pricing when you go to a responsible breeder. Off hand, the only real difference in pricing I've seen seems to be that it does vary by region of the US - kind of like everything :D. If a breeder is pricing by colour, male vs. female, or AKC registered/not, I'd immediately look for another breeder - personally I would consider those red flags and RUN. There may be breeders that charge differently for pet vs. show, but there are plenty that don't - none that I've encountered do. A good place to start to find a responsible breeder is always the BCOA breeders directory at basenji.org. And don't forget to verify health tests on offa.org

I do not get these designer hybrids anyway, and the amount of money they ask for them!! outragious!! wasnt there some years ago, something like the "american barkless dog" as well? some basenji hybrid? but it appeared they werent barkless after all? I have this scientific book on dogs and for some scientific studies they also crossed basenjis with ****er spaniels , it turned out they all could bark. BUt these werent the so called american barkless dogs. this book dated from the 60-ies and that american barkless dog form way later.

I understand what you are talking about. I have actually talked to someone about leasing one of my dogs. But, it is with the intent of me sending him overseas for a few years then getting him back after he has been used for breeding an been able to have a wonderful show career over there. As Pat and Lisa said, this is not common in the US. Personally, I would want to know WHY they want two dogs. Training two Basenjis is NOT the same as training two Afghans or Beagles. I could see wanting to move to a less hairy breed, as she has uber amounts of hair in her place I am sure! You have to think… do your puppy to be the one that gets the short end of the stuck and you get it back and have to "fix" what wasn't done in raising that you would have done? There are so many what-ifs to ponder to decide if this is really the route you want to go. Also, you have to know that if she gets a male and a female, the likelihood of an accident is always there... so you would want to make sure if the other is a carrier, yours MUST be a clear, and vice versa. Better to be safe than sorry. You can email me off the boards if you want, I might be able to help you.

I will do the Fanconi test, for my own peace of mind. When my Lucy died, it was so unexpected that I wonder if she had it; I got her from a young gal that bred her two basenjis, so I never knew her pedigree. I was surprised to see the AKC Registration numbers for both of Halo's parents, knowing that she came from a mill, and I went on AKCs web site to validate that the number is valid. I am also impressed that the basenji website even had little Halo recognized as a dog…. how did she do that? :)

Pam Geoffroy [Eldorado] is President of the BCOA and Debbi Hauri [Mata Hauri] is a longtime Basenji breeder. I am sure you would love a pup from either of them :-)

Tanza, thats interesting about being able to 'pay' for extra letters… Would see hell freeze over before that happens down under :D... Took us years and years of hard work and slog to only just recently be allowd the 30... A further increase in the number will never happen in my lifetime, quite possibly not in my kids lifetime either :p...

Those of you who don't know who Jennifer Hill is, please go to the site on this forum about 6 yr old b needing a home. I was going to rewrite it here, but even for me, that is over the top. Jennifer Hill is wonderful. I am so glad she found the forum.

I've been feeding 50% raw daily (raw in the evening only) and it made a remarkable improvement with Kananga. He used to have issues with loose stools, but honestly as soon as I started him on the raw, it improved significantly and now there are no problems. Soon enough I may make the transition to do 100% raw.

I had to drive 4 hours to pick up Zoni. She screamed bloody murder after I put her in the crate for about 20 minutes and went to sleep after that. She screamed again a few times but only lasted a few minutes. I don't blame her since she was ripped away from her siblings and going home with some strange people. It will be fine, you may just have to turn up the radio. :P

Except then they will do what the book says because you expect them to do otherwise. They can be contrary that way.

You can dual register him. Register him with AKC and then use the AKC registration to qualify for CKC registration.

The counter is the closest thing that is available in relation to their x-pen. With these little buggers it's hard enough working with one without having three more jumping around too!

@wizard: Here's a second thought … what if we (the forum) put together a little checklist or short blurb for people who are considering a basenji or who just acquired one. This can list all the important things to consider (was the dog tested for fanconi, how to test your dog for fanconi, personality issues, etc.) without "the attitude" that sometimes comes across in postings to new introductions. This "Considering a basenji?/For the new owner" could go right at the top of the forum so when people surf into the site it would be right there - they wouldn't even have to scroll down to see topics - right there at the top. Good Idea, but we have tons of sticky notes already that people never read. If there was a way to put it on the Forum that would drive people to "must read"… that would be great
