Top USA Breeders?

Breeder Talk
  • With the risk of causing some trouble, I'm interested in what the "top" breeders are in USA, and with top I mean a breeder that has several Bs that have done really well in shows, or that have an exceptionally great personality.

Hope this question, nor potential replies will offend anyone…

  • I think its a good question…shouldn't offend anyone. Sadly, I don't know.

  • Done well in the US or done well across the many ponds? And I assume you mean breed only - not performance? Done well in US I would say: Eldorado, Adventureland, Jasiri/Sukari to name a few that have multiple Group winners
or Best In Show winners in the past year or so. As for temperamant - I can not say have not met any of their top dogs in person. Perhaps if you could clarify what exaclty you are looking for in the query - we could hone in better on a reply.

And then more of present day breeders is Klassic, Kazor, Sonbar, Arubmec, Signet, Taji, Platimum, Ankhu, Jokuba, Zuri (although they have not been breeding much recently)

Advertureland in the dog's name would be seen as AB.

  • Thank you for your replies! Now an entirely different question that I maybe should make a new thread for, but that I feel some of you might still be able to find and answer here:

Do you know of plans to import from Congo in the future and how to get in contact with the right people to take part in such an adventure?

  • Email me privately and I can hook you up with some contacts. sinbaje@comcast.net

Interesting. Our Shaun is the product of two of the breeders on your list: Taji and Platinum. Both Katie and MaryK have really impressed us with their program, long term devotion to the breed, great communication, and above all their wonderful dogs…

Add Meisterhaus to this list :)

One breeder from San Diego (Rancho Penasquitos) retired from their day jobs and moved to Texas; Bob & Terry Reed of Illusion Basenjis. Another San Diego breeder (Spring Valley) passed away almost 2 years ago; Doug Joy of Basenjis of Dune. Not all reputable breeders are visible on the BCOA website. Some don't want their kennels named because they do not breed very often. You should contact the breeder liaison via email for more breeders in California and other nearby states. The local breed club for southern California is The South Coast Basenji Fanciers. They can help you find a local breeder. The quickest way to get in touch with them if through their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SoCalBasenjiFanciers Northern California also has a breed club that you can contact, BCONC. Their Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/norcalbasenjis

@cheryl-goodman - Have you talked to your girl's breeder? Have you completed all health testing and recorded it with www.offa.org as public record, especially DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA? Have you done any showing or performance events with your girl?

We were saddened and disappointed in our visit there. It was our first exposure to the Breed unfortunately. We are working with Robyn and a reputable breeder in South Georgia currently. We are hopeful for a match with a young adult Or teen. Thanks for your input.

Fopaws is great. I actually bred to one of their boys and since then we have become extended family. They are wonderful people with wonderful dogs!

@Nemo: Here's the link. http://www.basenji.org/learn/ Go to "screening breeders" at the top. That is a great list…and great explanations of why those questions are important.

Yes, Arlene, you do need at some point to take a stand and trust what you see and what you like… Breeding comes down to that in the end.... And with a bitch that is only 1 1/2 yrs looking down from the top is not a very good judge... IMO... reason?... They are not mature yet... and they shouldn't be.... their ribs have not even "sprung" at this age.. again IMO.... I would be hard pushed to say a dog is "wider" in the front then the rear at this age by just looking down on them.... again IMO.... Here is a link to 3 pictures of Kobey, 6wks, 3 months and 5 1/2 months... everything I saw on this pup at 6 wks that I liked (and that is a bit early then the 8 wks usually used for evaluating pups) I still see... but there are differences while growing... Now granted this pup is one of the few that has yet to really fall apart with a growing spurt... And also the faults that I saw at 6wks are still there too..... www.tanzabasenjis.net/kobeygrowing.html
