Basenji Feeding

Paco eats Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul usually, and will move up to the Dog Lover's Soul when he's a year old. On occasion, the store is out of his food and we either cook him some boneless chicken or give him raw beef - he's also a huge fan of eggs, more cooked than raw, though he'll eat it either way.

This is interesting – thanks for the heads up. I stopped going to PetSmart because I didn't like any of their foods or treats (Blue Buffalo was the "best" they had, but that brand has recently been marred with toxicity reports). I found much a better selection and great prices at local mom & pop boutiques, but this is good information to know if I'm ever out of my neighborhood and needing dog food...

Hello, thebartsch! Welcome. I was told that itching that starts from the tail/back and moves forward is usually flea bites. But if the itching stopped with a change of food, that's great too. I once bought a book, 'The Food Dogs Die For' - after page 1 I stopped reading it was very revealing about manufactured feeds - a bit too much for me!

I just thought I would add - you may want to try Canidae - it is grain free. Solid Gold is another great product I have my bas on.

I don't think you will have a problem….. I have switched between varieties with Franie and C-Me with no problems

As a newbie to the breed, I appreciate that all of the information is contained in one spot. It is great to be able to get a broad range of opinions in one thread.

Gizmo is loving his raw bone from the butchers experience. He has had 2 so far. The rib bone goes down nicely, and I have not seen it break into any sharp shards at all. But I still take it away once it is down to a small enough size so that he has the whole thing in his mouth and is chewing at it with is head up high. I don't want him to get too over excited and try to swallow it. Today I was going to mix it up by giving him a rawhide bone instead…he just sniffed it and looked at me as if saying "Where is the good stuff!?!" :D

If she only liked "Old Roy", it would be better than not eating! The Diamond sounds like an OK food, especially as she likes it.

What DOESN'T Proctor and Gamble own? I hate hearing about product takeovers because you can pretty well be assured that quality goes down.

@nkjvcjs: I'm not at home, so I can't remember what we switched to, but I think it is the same thing. It comes in 4lb bags, and has a pheasant variety that the dogs are nuts for. -Nicole Yea, must be the same one. I picked up a 4lbs bag of the chicken formula and pheasant formula.

Put the food down for 15 minutes then take it away. Do NOT leave it out for her to pick at until the next feeding. There are two reasons for this. The first is you want to know exactly how much she is really eating at each feeding. The second is by removing her access to food in between feedings you will teach her to eat when food is offered because food won't be available whenever she wants it. As for her thinnning out, my puppy boy is going to be 17 weeks old on Thursday and is a bit skinny this week since he had a growth spurt. Puppies tend to go through cycles of just a little pudgy, just right, a bit skinny and back again as they grow and their calorie demands flux depending on the amount of growth.

I tried answering via my phone, but I guess it didn't work. I usually don't measure but mix it all into their meats, or kibble if they are on it. They love quinoa, shoot they love anything coming from the kitchen..:) Usually a few times a week, to maybe three times a week, veggies they get daily and green smoothies, at least Otis, he adores my green smoothies.

looks like Sid may have to suffer through his brushings every day instead of greenies. I don't like all the negative things I've been hearing! Eeeek.

@Kipawa: Dan, that must look rather interesting in your neighbourhood. I wonder what your basenji thinks you are looking for. :) He looks at me like :eek: "what the hell are you doing"? "I just pooped there now let's get the hell outta here"!!

I feed twice a day. When Lola was a puppy, she would eat so fast she would throw up at every single meal. I bought a bowl with little dividers in it that forced her to eat slowly. She immediately stopped throwing up. She had to use that bowl for over a year before she learned to pace herself, and now she can finally use a regular bowl without throwing up.

Hi, just reading through some posts, and this one caught my eye. Most kennels know that a slight loss of appetite is inevitable and tell the customers as such(I do….) I try to wait till the next day to see if the new dog will eat as this being a natural survival instinct for a dog to eat when hungry. Always rare exceptions of course...another story... Anyway, may I suggest to help with the diarreah with the supplement of adding a teaspoon or so of pumpkin to the 'normal' food the dog is used to. A watered down version of a good canned food over the kibble also has done the trick with boarded dogs as well. Start off with half the kibble and then increase with dog's desire to continue so that the kibble will not go to waste as it is wet and bloated and will one will have a dish of bacteria if left out....Just talk it over with the attendant or Doctor as such.
