    Hello all… been meaning to update since we got to California but it has just been crazy hectic settling in. Wanted to quickly ask the peanut gallery about this food for Tayda. She needs LOW protein - preferably around 16-18% because of her renal insufficiency. I've tried lots of different foods - usually "senior" cause they have low protein - and she's just the pickiest little eater. I went to the grand opening of a new pet store here in Sac and there was a rep from the Diamond company. I know they have gotten a bad rap cause of recalls and I specifically asked them about it - he talked about additional checks and quality control that have been implemented since that all happened a couple years ago. Anyway, he recommended the Adult Lite version of their food for me to try - actually gave me a 15lb bag as a 'sample' cause he didn't actually have any sample sizes of it with him.

    Tayda actually eats it! What do you guys think of the ingredients? Couldn't find this specific one on dogfoodanalysis.com - found some of their other ones and mostly the negatives were about "insufficient meat content" and some of their foods use beet pulp, which is apparently controversial. Well, I actually am looking for less meat content and this one does not list beet pulp as an ingredient...

    Just wanted to run it by you all and see what you thought! Here are the ingredients. Any opinions are appreciated!

    Calories: 3,035 kcal/kg (275 kcal/cup) Calculated ME
    Available in 15 lb and 30 lb bags.

    Lamb meal, ground rice, cracked pearled barley, oatmeal, peas, millet, powdered cellulose, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), flaxseed, natural flavor, fish meal, potassium chloride, choline chloride, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, L-Carnitine, vitamin E supplement, chondroitin sulfate, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

    IMO…. due to the fact that she has Fanconi.... anything that she eats readily that is working for her and in the value range that she needs to be in, is the way to go.

    Just my opinion, but 90% of the battle with many Fanconi dogs is just getting them to eat period.

    I tried Avoderm - didn't like it. Also, Wellness Senior, Blue Buffalo, Nutro Ultra, Nutro Natural Choice, Innova Senior, Merrick Senior… etc etc.

    This is so far the only seemingly successful food - just wondering what y'all think of its ingredients?

    As far as the ingredients, I have certainly seen much worse.. and in all honesty… I think the ingredients are fine

    If she only liked "Old Roy", it would be better than not eating! The Diamond sounds like an OK food, especially as she likes it.

    I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

I don't usually have barley in the pantry, but I'll give it a go. Quick follow up: I made barley for the first time tonight... well, technically I made a Homemade Vegetable Barley Soup. The entire family chowed down and then doodle passed out for the night. ;) I'm sure we will have Barley again (and I'm not just saying that because there's easily 4 servings left).

    We switched our 2 boys to raw from kibble about 6 months ago. The switch came because we were simply exhausted from walking them 3 times a day because they had loose stool (we don't have fenced in yard, so we need to walk them to go to the bathroom). Our vet recommended more fiber in their diet to help with loose stool. This intuitively just didn't resonate with us. Basenji are one of the most ancient breeds of dog… why on earth would more fiber be a solution to their problem (I know the theoretical why, but logically it was counter-intuitive)? We read many sources or literature on the raw diet and thought this would be a good switch for them. Again, they are an ancient breed so moving toward raw foods seemed appropriate and logical. It took that about a month for them to get really accustomed to eating raw chicken quarters, rabbit halves or pork shoulders but now they have no problem gulping their meal right down, bone and all (for those of you who don't feed raw, gulping is a normal behavior and bone is an essential part of the diet). Their digestion issues have vanished and we've even seen marked improvement in their destructive behavior. Two super happy boys now, two super happy Basenji owners!!

    @Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

    Yeah, Jack is like that with broccoli- when he sees me pulling it out of the fridge to cook for me, he gets all excited and trembly with anticipation. He immediately sits and watches until he just can't stand it anymore and then he's HANGING TEN COUNTER SURFING!!!!!!
