  • @tanza:

and IMO every household should have a "fresh" bottle around in the home.

    Amen to that Pat,
I haven't had to worry yet with Zaire (Knock on wood), but Charlie has given me a couple of scares with what he chooses to eat that have required a Hydrogen Peroxide "Treatment" :)

  • WOW! That is a lot of info-

The chocolate thing- the further you get from pure chocolate, the less fatal it becomes, so, milk chocolate is not so bad, dark chocolate is not so good, and baker's chocolate is really bad. One morning, we came out to find that Jack had eaten half of a reese's peanut butter bar. I immediately jumped on the internet and found the info that someone (Tucker, I think?) already shared. I watched him closely, he drank a lot of water and then pooped a whole lot, and he was fine. We don't leave candy bars out anymore.

I really didn't know that broccoli was bad for him…..he looooooves it. He will do anything for broccoli, and it is actually the only vegetable I can get him to eat.

  • I give all mine broccoli all the time and I have never had a problem…. ever.....

  • My b's will tapdance for cheese.

  • The turkey skin thing- is that just in large quantities? Like, on Thanksgiving, If I give him a little turkey with a little skin, is that okay?

  • Back to the peroxide treatment … what is the amount to be given? Is it diluted any?
I always have peroxide in the house for nasty cuts etc. but didnt' know about its use to induce vomiting.

Given Straight…. usually 2 to 3 teaspoons.. you should see "results" in 5 to 10 minutes longest.... you do have to make sure it is "fresh" as in it "fizzes"...

I give mine broccoli all the time also, with no problems. Add a bit of cheddar cheese and Keoki thinks he's died and gone to doggy heaven. Asparagus too – those are his two favorite veggies, bar none.

  • Dallas eats broccoli as well. I was giving him a little bit of milk but he developed a small rash in his ears that the vet thought may have been from the milk. He still eats cheese though weekly & will do just about anything for it…with a basenji you have to add "just about anything". LOL

  • Yeah, Jack is like that with broccoli- when he sees me pulling it out of the fridge to cook for me, he gets all excited and trembly with anticipation. He immediately sits and watches until he just can't stand it anymore and then he's HANGING TEN COUNTER SURFING!!!!!!

I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

@Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

@Varanus: So I have Yoshi on Canidae All Life Stages right now, and I don't think it's the food for him. He's doing better on it than on the lower-meat-content Three Dog Bakery food I was using, but it isn't making him as happy and healthy as it could. For various reasons, I don't think I can do a raw diet right now, so I'm interested in kibble recommendations. I'm willing to spend money to get good food for him to thrive on, but I'm also not made of cash. Recommendations? B's are funny about there food, I only feed dry food and use Wellness brand, which has been good for my B's, Try a newpaper under the bowl so it wond shift around, that may help. If he hungry enough he will eventually eat. Good luck.

@Robin_n_Jack: I was having the same problem with Jack recently…he's 2...he wouldn't eat, I called it his anorexic phase. He would eat acouple of bites in the morning, ad about half of his food in the afternoon. There has been a lot of excitement around lately (Dad's home, and we are packing to move) so I thought that might have something to do with it, and I figured he would eat when he was hungry. He hasn't been acting lethargic or sick, just not eating. Finally, after trying everything I could think of, treats in with the food (worked for a little while) pretending to eat it my self and trying to hand feed him(he looked at me like "If you think it is so good, why don't you eat it?) this morning I mixed some water in with the food. Next thing I know, it was all gone. Yay! no more Ally McBeal doggie! Glad to hear that he is eating again. :-) I think we all know what its like to worry that your B isn't eating enough.

i was so concerned about the recall when it first happened I took for granted checking the labels again.
