@BasenjiMaya: Thank you for the help. I really appreciate everyone's input. Our plan is to have her spayed so we'll see if the vet can take care of the hernia then. (We'd love to breed her, but I just don't think we would be able to put in the care and planning with breeding. But Basenji's are so adorable, it's hard to say no to breeding.) It is pretty simple to have it fixed with spay… and as far as breeding there is lots that goes into it along with planning and care..and finding the right homes and being prepared to care for those pups for their lifetime... especially money.... so I think you are making the wise decision

well i know that if you pour table salt in your hand and squeeze an ice cube you can get serious burns. i'm sure it's possible the salt and ice have the same affect on puppy paws.

They should be both equally as accurate, but you just have to make sure that the dog hasn't eaten anything that was alive for a MINIMUM of an hour before the cheek swab, while it doesn't really matter for the blood test.

And there are just some bitches that "mark" their bedding… period... My Mickii's litter sister for her entire life would mark bedding (and she didn't have Fanconi)...

Dallas will do this when he pees in his crate. However, that is the only time I have ever noticed. I actually have never caught him doing it either, but my mom has. Not to mention, I have come home & my room will smell like he peed but the crate will be dry. I assume that's what he has done. I asked my vet & they said it isn't anything serious that should cause concern.

The one time this happened to my german shepherd mix, she had to be put under anesthesia to cut the nail off. I got her to the vet right away, and they took care of it. The nail grew out just fine after that, and we never had another problem.

Thanks, Both come from one very good breeder in Holland, his whole kennel is tested clear. We're going to test our Brindle one for hd and some more health tests (Buana is already tested before) and we will discuss it woth our vet. He is very interested in Basenji's and knows a lot about Fanconi.

Hopefully you can find something "middle" of the road…. that works well with any tummy issues he might have to some meats... or grains

One of the main things they looks for on fatty tumors is "is it connected"… or can you get your fingers around it... meaning it is not attached to anything.... usually when not attached to anything they are OK... just very "unsightly"....

Well I have used the benzoyl for 2 days now, going on #3. I can see some hair regrowing in some of the spots but not all. So I am praying this is going to work for her. I just hate to see her this way :(

I trust Dr. Dodds recommendations. When Ed and Nicky were tested there were some low values for Nicky but she said "OK for age and breed". Eddie however had some slightly low, some high, the testing lab (U of Michigan) recommended not to treat, but she said 1 1/2 mcg twice a day and everyone can see improvement in him, he is more active and playful again. We are waiting for results of his re-check to see if meds need adjustment. I am so glad my vet was willing to go with Dr. Dodds recommendations rather than U of M! So glad Nemo is OK!

He is rated OFA Normal, everything is in range other than the Free T3 and Total T3 values which are both low. And amazingly, Dr Dodd has already responsed to my email. She said those low values are usually an indication of "some non-thyroidal issues" but everything else looked good (she even provided the normal sighthound ranges for all of the tests). So, I guess I'll have to figure out what "some non-thyroidal issues" may entail and if it's something I need to address. I guess I'll put a separate post about that.
