Getting our first basenji soon!

Greetings to everyone! We have been surfing the forum for information and enjoy all of the photos and videos! Thank you for this awesome community! We reside in CT and have been thinking about the basenji breed for close to 15 years. We communicated with a great woman in IL that was a breeder and she was a huge wealth of information on the breed and fanconi and started us on the path to learning. We currently have a petite 8 lb female bengal cat and a 65 lb female german shepherd mixed with lab. Both of our current pets love other animals and each other so adding another will be fine! We have regular visits from a toy poodle that belongs to my sister and Gypsy the dog goes on play dates with her boxer friend Sage- another female who incidently does not usually get along with other dogs. My husband and I have never done crate training and are awaiting the crate that is supposed to arrive tomorrow. We bought a plastic one with the metal vents and the smallest spaces in between that was available. Originally I bought a metal one suitable for pets up to 70 pounds. I figure the metal one will go into the living room for use when we are in that room and the plastic one will be for travel and will go into our bedroom since the other 2 critters sleep on the bed! This is going to be an adventure I am sure! We also reside with my mother and she has been adjusting to the fact that the house is getting basenji proofed! She dreams of having a "better homes and gardens" house and this is a great reason to discard clutter and organize! All of the chemicals for cleaning have been put into containers with locking lids and my husband is going to design a basenji proof wastebasket for the bathroom since I have not been able to find one. Has anyone here had success with pedal operated lids? I think they may be smart enough to figure that out! Any additional tips or advise are welcome! The pups are 5 weeks old today and we are going to visit them on Saturday! We found a really great breeder here in CT and this is our second time going to visit! She had another litter that we visited 5 weeks ago and there is one left from that one that is now 9 weeks! We are very excited that the dream is becoming real and look forward to having another intelligent member of the pack!

Welcome to the forum. We're so glad you're here. And congratulations on your pup! Sounds like you're definitely on the right track getting, getting the house basenji-proofed and such. I look to forward to hearing all about him/her and seeing pictures.

Congrats on your new puppy!
What is great.. is that you have researched and are going to a reputable breeder!
You will be very happy with Cindy. She is a quiet and unobtrusive gal, but knowledgeable about the breed… AND each of her litters has at least one clear parent. NO FANCONI possible in these litters.

Have fun visiting those puppies!!

Welcome..we are all excited to see your new arrival.

We have a stainless steel pedal operated trashcan in our kitchen. 🙂 Our Basenjis can open it.

I'm not entirely certain, but I believe they use their noses to lift the lid.
We even tried putting heavy magnets on top, which make it difficult to open using the pedal, but Keoki manages to lift the lid quite easily.
We got this can in September and it only took a couple of weeks before they were able to get into it…..and into trouble!
So, we're back to the drawing board.

We keep our bathroom doors closed, which works beautifully, except when guests come and leave them open :rolleyes: {Personally, I prefer the bathroom doors to be shut, dogs or no dogs. It's just not a room whose odors I need to have wafting through the house anyway, :p}

Oh! And Welcome!

Welcome! I'm very excited for you! Can't wait to see pictures.

As for trashcans…. I usually give up trying & keep them up high or in a cabinet or closet. Annoying, but it works.

Welcome to the forum, bet you can't wait 😃

Hello and Welcome…. I echo Kathy's post!!!

We have a trash compactor... has pretty much solved the trash problem! Other waste baskets live "up" high up!

First Basenji's

You are right. My b figured it out the first day. Ours is also one of the metal pedal operated trash cans, but it's in the bathroom, so he can only get in it if someone accidentally leaves the door open… then he has a field day!

Our kitchen trash can is a Rubbermaid Liner Lock trash can. It has a band that locks around the rim to hold the bag in place and the lid slips under a small lip in the front of the band. He still hasn't figured out how to open the lid and we've had it since December. If he was to knock it over, he could probably get the lid off, but when we leave (he is uncrated), we set it on a high counter. I think I bought it at Walmart.

Good luck!!!

Hey What breeder in CT are you getting your pup from? I'm in CT also!

Michelle,

Khanis mentioned a Cindy so I think it's C-quest. Unless there are a lot of basenji breeders in CT with first name Cindy…..but what are the chances?

That's too funny…I just emailed Cindy at C-Quest Basenji in CT this morning asking for information!

What a small world! :p

Houston

Welcome to the forums..nice to have you and yours here..I can't wait to see that little bundle of yours. Have fun visiting and take pictures..
Sounds like you are prepared..good feeling isn't it?

:)It is great to be prepared although I am sure the pup will think of something I missed! Yes, it is Cindy at C-Quest. She is awesome and her pups are wonderful! We are very excited! How did you people guess? It is a very small world indeed! My husband bought me a new mini camcorder/ camera for Valentines so the pics and videos will be coming as soon as we get our bundle of cuteness! Thanks to all for the trash receptacle info! There may be a market for a basenji-proof can!

It is not such a small world when people go to responsible breeders because you find that we all know each other, regardless of where we live…. it is a breath of fresh air.... and it is a small world for those that are not responsible breeders, because as breeders they are not known for responsible breeding and/or heath testing.

And the Basenji proof can.. is the Trash Compactor.. been through more the 20 Basenjis and none have ever figured out how to open...gggg

Live in a rental… no room for one of those.
I have a 5 gal bucket and my broken pedal can is on top of that... not that is matters.. the taller ones can get in it anyways...
and of course bathroom trash is up high on the stand behind the toilet!

At least De La would wait until I walked away before stepping on the pedal and getting in to scavenge on the chicken bones and running hell bent for election before I could catch her.... that bitch was smart!

You said CT... there are only two responsible breeders up there.. Cindy and Gretchen... I knew that Cindy co-bred a few litters with Rusella... and Gretchen had pups last year.. so it was only Cindy with pups that young! MONK I try to be!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new addition! Can't wait to see pics!

We have pedal bins in the kitchen and bathroom. They do the trick for us.. 🙂 Haven't found a B in there yet..

We have a can with a push button that makes the top spring up. We took off the spring so that you have to push the button with one hand and lift the lid with the other.
That has worked so far.

That sounds like a good idea 😃
We too have the pedal-thing and Zuri always open it with her nose
I keep the doors shut…

Welcome to the forum!
Your preparations sound great!!! 😉
And I'm also looking forward to the pics.

Looks like your connection to Basenji Forums was lost, please wait while we try to reconnect.
