Need advice for newborn basenji

Hi all,
I would like to have new Basenji puppy. I do not have option to see dad an mom in real. Therefore i would like to have your advice about my target puppy from all expert owners of Basenji.
How can i understand original blood or not?Can you send me your comment on review of the attached photos?
I am worry his ear is not up (1 month old)
-
Hello and welcome. Cute pup. What is the breeding (pedigree), you can search at www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/search.html and you can also search at www.offa.org for health testing. Also go to www.basenji.org and learn about Basenjis.
The ears will not come up until about 6 weeks and then they can go up and down, especially when teething.
-
My Basenjis ears were exactly the same at a month.
-
At what age are they letting you have the puppy? Most responsible breeders don't let them go until they approximately 10 or more weeks old. Tails take awhile to grow and loop more. At a month old the tails normally look much like your photo.
Make sure you have the registration numbers for the parents so you will be able to easily find the on the OFA site.
-
He looks like any cute wee Basenji puppy. Ears will come up, tail will come over and curl tighter. There is good rear angulation and good sized growing muscles. White feet, white tail tip, he appears very nicely marked.
But as you have already had suggested to you, go to the on-line pedigree database to check out Mom and Dad because I guess the pup isn't registered yet. In that case, just check the parents on OFA too cos puppy won't have a number yet.
Fanconi and PRA OFA results will be on the pedigree website for the parents in any case.
Do you want a Basenji to show (and love) or just to love ? Main thing is the health of the parents, but the breeder should be able to give you chapter and verse on that.
Good luck !
-
and while he is so young, can you visit him? get to know him and let him get used to your smell. make sure he gets the puppy shots, and the forever shots (like parvo). Try not to take him home until he has about 10 to 12 weeks of age, (as late as possible, is good). Check out Mum and Dad on the zande database, OFA, and find out as much as you can about the breed traits and habits. buy a crate that he will grow into, the crate should be big enough to stand and turnaround without touching the side, or top. That will be useful to bring him home, and take some bedding so that he will be used to the new smells. Good luck.

**Okay - I will take a dozen of him. Oh my goodness is he adorable! I am not experienced in Basenji puppies but a friend of mine has had several. This is what I know: If your puppy's ears stand up when he gets excited, they probably will stand permanently by the time he is 6-months-old. Another way to tell if your pup's ears are likely to stand is by observing where they are set on the head. ears that will stand, even partially, tend to be set higher on the head and closer together than pendant ears.
I agree with Tanza. The cartilage at the base of a standing ear will begin to start feeling firm by 4-to-6 weeks old. Enjoy your baby because Basenji do not stay puppies for long! In the past I did bring home the 'pick of the litter' Samoyed pup when I lived in Michigan. I had to take him away from Momma a little too soon for reasons too numerous to mention. Because of that, there were issues to overcome. He overcame them, but it was lots and lots of love and work. ** **

Even better - send a piece of bedding to the breeders to put down with the rest of the litter or the parents for a couple of nights so he brings familiar smells with him when you pick him up OR if he is shipped to you in some other way.
I always did that - ask puppy purchasers for a piece of bedding which the baby could take away, impregnated with 'homely' scents.
I wonder why you can't see either Dad OR Mom ?

He's adorable! Makes me really, really want a puppy this year.

I hear you ! I'd love another litter and to keep a puppy but Hoover is too old now (10) and so am I !

Caner-HI! It's Nancy Scott, your facebook friend. It looks like you found yourself a great Basenji pup!!!! WHAT a cutie. You are getting good advice above about making the transition easier for your pup. How are you going to get him? You really have to check out the airline if he is flying...a lot of dogs die on the trip due to ignorance and neglect. And when are you getting him-and how old will he be? Basenjis really need their Moms until at least 10 weeks (as you read above.) I can't tell you how happy I am for you! Get ready to laugh at their antics (even the destructive ones!) Basenjis really have a sense of humor. Please keep everyone posted on your progress...you are now part of a big caring family of people owned by Basenjis!!!!

"According to DoT statistics, 26 animals died while being transported on planes in 2016, a rate of 0.5 per 10,000 animals transported. "
A lot of dogs don't die. If you eliminate brachycephalic breeds and flying in hot summer months, nearly all would be removed. People panic and stress over flights, but far more pets are killed going for a car ride. Almost none of the car restraints actually prevent deaths to the pet, but can keep them from being ejected or hurting people in the car.I agree be careful. Hopefully the breeder, if he has to fly, does not allow any puppy to be flown without someone accompanying it so it can go in the cabin. But thousands of puppies are flown in the US yearly.

@nancyss hi Nancy, thank you for your replay. I am waiting cabin care my puppy next to me from turkish airlines. this is so important I do not want let her to under airplane I will keep you update. thank you for your interesting.

No airline will allow Pet in Cabin over the Atlantic Ocean or any large expanse of water. That is why we always tried to fly puppies from London to Newark, New Jersey (just about over 4 hours) and then they changed planes and could ride the rest of the trip as P-i-C. And we always insisted the new owner fetched the puppy so it is good to hear you are flying with the little one.
We went through weeks of training the pup to be alone in a crate, we put human diapers under the bedding so the wetness only went one way, we fed the pup low residue diet for a couple of days before the flight and we put ice cubes into the drinking bowl. These melted by the time the puppy needed a drink but weren't slopped over if the crate was carelessly carried.
And I've said it before -but here it is again, KLM is the BEST airline for caring for puppies and dogs !

Caner-I am so glad that you are flying with your new little girl. What is her name??? You two will definitely bond on the flight, becuause if you have a friendly seatmate, they will probably have no objection to you holding a sweet puppy sleeping in your arms!!!! I can't wait to see pictures of you and her together!!!! XOXOXO

@debradownsouth While it is true that myriads of pets do not die during cargo flights, what if the one who was neglected and died of heat stroke was YOURS????? DOT does not report "near misses" ...dogs left on the tarmac in heat or rain for hours-but not enough to die, dogs traumatized by rough handling by unfeeling freight handles who can't seem to understand that a living thing is not "freight" and should not be handled as such, dog who have NO water offered to them when flights are delayed overnight for for long hours....etc. We flew our first Basenji and our flight was delayed by 6 hours. When she arrived at baggage claim, she was completely tramautized and it took lots of work to get her to feel comfortable again. I have never felt so ashamed for this decision. I will NEVER fly another Basenji unless I am right there with them. I don't roll dice on the odds on my beloved Basenjis.

Sally, not sure how long it has been since you've flown, but I assure you small enough dogs/puppies do fly in the cabin. Two people I knew flew at the same time I did from NY to Israel. Both had their small dogs in the cabin.
Small cats and dogs are allowed to travel in the cabin of the aircraft on most El Al flights. You will need an approved airline pet carrier. You must notify El Al that you are traveling with a pet. Reservations cannot be made online.
El Al Airline Pet Policy - Fly Your Dog or Cat Safely - Pet Travel
https://www.pettravel.com/airline_pet_rules/elal.cfmTurkish Airlines allows dogs, cats, and small birds (goldfinches, budgies, and canaries) to travel in the cabin, as long as the combined weight of the pet and carrier doesn't exceed 17 lbs (8 kg). ... A maximum of 2 carriers are allowed per passenger, but only 1 is permitted in the cabin.....For international flights, the total weight of the pet and carrier will be multiplied by the excess baggage fee for that route.
Air Canada: Air Canada and Jazz flights welcomes small cats and dogs in the cabin if the combined weight of the pet and carrier is under 22 lbs (10 kg). Your pet counts as 1 of your carry-on items and must be stowed under the seat in front of you for the duration of the flight. On domestic flights, pet fees for 1-way travel range between $50-59. On international flights, pet fees for 1-way travel range between $100-118.

So you don't take them in the car except medical necessity? That's rolling the dice. I could list more things, but your condescending "I don't roll dice" is well, condescending.
My point wasn't that animals don't die... they do. But not the dire picture you claim. If you need to fly a pet, then know the stats, check the airline's policies (such as taking out for water if delayed), and decide. You don't choose to fly a dog... your choice. But telling someone they are pretty much being inhumanely irresponsible for flying a pet and exaggerating the risks is not, to me, honest or fair. Again, have flown quite a few dogs and puppies over the years, none arrived stressed out, except the puppy that a friend's mother delivered to me from PA to GA. Totally wigged out. She was a very intense sensitive dog who was a joy to train and work with, but being in the cabin didn't help her at all. I suspect the cargo would have been quieter and less stressful. And btw, if going cargo, some airlines leave the pet with you until they are actually ready to board them.. so you can check. When I flew pups and adult rescues with Delta, I actually stayed with them until the little train thing came to go to the airplane, watched them loaded, and drive off to the plane.
I understand with your really stressful event that you choose not to have a puppy flown again. But please respect that others can choose to without you indicating they are less caring about their dogs than you because you disagree.

It has nothing to do with a friendly seatmate. Almost all airlines (I suspect all) have rules against you taking a pet out of its carrier.
