Basenjis and Plastic

Basenji Talk
  • Can anyone tell me why Basenjis like plastic so much.
Benji used to counter surf pens, glasses, combs etc and chew them up with relish. If you were in another room and heard chewing it used to fill you with dread to see what he'd got. The worst damage he did was my husbands new glasses and my mother in laws false teeth. However he was unimpressed by a nylon bone which i felt sure he would love.

  • I think because they smell like us humans. AND they are expensive!!!

  • I used to give my second beastie the thick plastic packages (like with batteries or something) that are so difficult to open - he'd tear them apart for me :D

  • Otis is favorite thing to steal…IF no food is around is plastic ziplock bags, they can be empty, brand new ones and he still has to tear them open to see what might be in there...silly B

  • Never thought of the reason - but it's a habit that has persisted through generations. Bungwa jumps on the table to collect any mail that is wrapped in a plastic cover - I wish they'd go back to paper envelopes!) He then proceeds to shred it but carefully leaving (so far) the contents.

  • Water bottles with or without water still left in the bottom:(. Thank goodness they never take the full ones.

  • Sol even chews the plastic handles on garden tools, as well as all parts of my plastic leaf rake. I can't ever leave a tool in the yard or he'll find it and maul it. It makes me pick up after myself, at least!

That is what I always tell people that are thinking about getting a Basenji… if nothing else, they will teach you and your family to pick up after themselves... and if they don't... its gone...

  • Katie has a penchant for the plastic drain pipes. We had to change the exposed drain pipes on our down-stairs bathroom sink from plastic to metal because she would chew the plastic piping, and we wouldn't notice until we had soaked our feet trying to wash our hands. It took three times before we had the sense to just change to metal drain pipes. I let her keep a plastic J-trap as a toy, after the switch, and she loves it.

She also loves glasses, remote controls, and pretty much any other plastic.

Edit: oh, and DVD cases, and water bottles are delightful toys too.

  • Kona's favorite things are empty water bottles and empty 2-liter soda bottles - they are loud but keep her entertained for at least an hour. Keoki looks at her like she is crazy!

  • I actually founs a really cool dogtoy at Walmart of all places. It is a bottle nuudy. Basically a cover in various fabric textures and fuzzy materials that has a plastic water bottle inside of it, so it crinkles and makes all the fun sounds of a waterbottle but it is more fun to chew on, or so at least or schnauzer mix thinks..it was only 4 bucks..

Kona had one of those but tore it to pieces in less than 5 minutes. I am not sure they are basenji-proof.

  • Oh yes, Gossy likes to attack plastic bottles too (no remote controls or dvds TG) and the plastic thing the seat is bolted to in my pickup and plastic lamp knobs and …
Her "favorite" is the old lawn sprinkler, which I now just leave out for her so she doesn't get into the good stuff.

  • Combs, pens yes, especially toothbrushes! I always thought they were bone alternatives. Plus combs and pens smell like us and the Bs know their not supposed to do that which is a bonus. I've never seen them go after water bottles or other random plastic. Now soft paper! Like paper towels etc. That is great fun. Plastic and paper is also great. Once Cody got down stairs when my brother and family were visiting. They had two boxes of Huggies down there. Cody was so quite for a while. We found him downstairs and my sister in law yelped "It's a huggies massacre!" He had neatly "shredded not chewed" the contents of both boxes.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
